About the Role
We are looking for a zero to one product builder to take us from blank slate to a functional, AI-native product that drives tangible value in our portfolio of construction businesses. You will be building for use, not building for sales, so everything you deliver will be quickly put in the hands of users, with support from our operations team to implement the product on the ground and a clear and responsive feedback loop directly from users to rapidly improve the product.
This is the first hire in the team, and you’ll be a key part of building the function along with the operations and engineering teams. You will work closely with the leadership team to define and refine the product vision and roadmap, lead product scoping and feature design, and build prototypes with hands on and/or AI driven coding.
You’ll also co-design with users in our portfolio companies, spending time with them to understand the reality of their day to day so you can build products that provide them actual value. You will need to understand their needs and workflows deeply without becoming anchored in the way they do things now; we expect workflows will need to be transformed. At the same time, you will need to sniff out which parts of the current workflows have significant value or trade secrets embedded in them so you can fervently protect and enhance those in the product design.
This is not a traditional product role, and there are many backgrounds we think could be successful here, so if the role excites you, please apply; we’d love to meet you and explore if there’s a fit!
Location: Hybrid, Montreal
Type: Full-time, permanent role. Competitive salary plus meaningful equity and benefits.
About Meroka
Meroka acquires high-quality construction businesses and helps them grow and scale. These businesses are essential to the economy and employ millions of individuals. The people who built these businesses, and the people who keep them running, should be the ones who get rich when those businesses succeed. They're not, today. We're building Meroka to change that.
Permanent ownership is at the heart of what we do. We are not looking to flip a business in five years and abandon it. We want to nurture these businesses and help them grow, enabled by products built out by our pioneering tech and operations team.
The owners of these businesses are intelligent entrepreneurs who provide a tangible, irreplaceable service. We want to partner with these individuals, learn from them and give them a stake in what they have built.
Ownership is at the heart of Meroka: when something is your own, you find purpose in your work; you take responsibility and you enjoy the upside you helped create.
Autonomy matters just as much to us. These are not deals we close at the end of a process. Each one is the start of a lifetime partnership where we are behind the scenes, providing the services and tech platforms that help our partners break into new markets, improve profitability and reinvest capital into their business.
They choose what they want from us, and we work with them on integrating the chosen products. We don't tell them what to do: it is a mutual partnership based on respect and passion for the built world.
We've raised roughly $25M CAD from Slow Ventures, 8VC, Better Tomorrow Ventures, Interplay and others. Our first business is acquired, with many more to come. Between them, the founders have built and run construction-tech businesses at real scale (think $100M in revenue and 600+ people), invested as venture capitalists, led M&A; for public companies, designed novel deal structures and joint ventures, run manufacturing lines and started companies of their own.
We are currently pursuing deals in Canada and will expand to the UK. We have one foot on the job site, one foot in Silicon Valley and straddle both worlds with steel-toe boots and a Tims in hand.
Beyond the founders, we are a small, tight-knit team based out of Montreal and London. We are enthusiastic, committed and relentless about growing Meroka, for our partner companies, investors and ourselves. We live and breathe this company, and that passion is an essential part of what makes Meroka special.
From the junior analyst to the CEO, everyone thinks about what is good for the company, what is good for our partners and how to contribute to Meroka’s success. We have a culture of "learn it all, not know it all", regardless of seniority. Every single member on the team is here because they want to build a business that creates wealth for stakeholders/ employees and champions the entrepreneurs that are too often forgotten.
This Is Not For You If…
- You want to work in a traditional, highly documented,
rule-based product management system
- You do your best work with precise specs, defined rituals, and a playbook to follow
- You want to hand off the hard work of prototyping and improving features to an engineer
- You want a controlled, predictable, highly systematized day to day
- You prefer to build expertise in a stable domain rather than constantly learning new areas and being a beginner
- You like problems to have a clear, straightforward, and unambiguous solution
What You'll Do
- Take our most transformational products from zero to one
- Scope, design, prototype, and iterate on features that go straight into businesses we operate.
- Spend time in the businesses we acquire talking to operators, understanding real workflows, and building tools people will actually use and gain value from.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to make sure the features that make the cut to get into our products are implementable with our partners, deliver tangible value, and delight the end users.
Who You Are
- You have practical expertise in a relevant field. This could be product, engineering, operations, construction management, laborer, etc - something that will help you understand, frame, and build good products for our portfolio
- You have led a team before
- You have fluency with AI coding tools and experience with the process of taking an idea and turning it into a tangible product
- You have a people-first lens, and understand that a product that people actually use is more valuable than a product that does everything perfectly
- You are comfortable in ambiguity, and like to build structure, tools, and tech to reduce ambiguity over time
- You excel at making connections between different domains to improve your understanding and innovate recent solutions
- You have an interest in the physical, built world and the operators who run it.
- You are fully fluent, written and spoken, in both French and English
Nice to Haves
- You have experience in a physical economy industry (warehousing, manufacturing, logistics, construction, etc)
- Extra points if you’ve been a construction project manager, site supervisor, or administrative support
- Experience building from scratch in an early-stage environment, a startup, or your own projects.
How to Apply
- Please send us either a short Loom video (preferred), your CV or a brief summary of your experience. We will reach out to you to schedule an introductory phone call as the first step of the interview process.
