Constables - Community Policing – Cells Constable, Experienced Officers Constables - Community Policing – Cells Constable, Experienced Officers Business Unit Surrey Police Service Surrey Police Service (SPS) is Surrey’s new municipalpolice agency.On November 29, 2024, SPS became the police ofjurisdiction, andassumed responsibility and command forpolicing andlaw enforcement in SurreySPS is working to redefine policing withinnovative new approaches and community-based solutions.As we continue to hire exceptionalindividuals, SPS will grow to be one of the largest independent police servicesin Canada. Throughout their career, Constables will have opportunitiesto serve in more than one SPS Bureau.
SPS is currently hiring Constables tojoin the Community Policing Bureau. Within the Community Policing Bureau, the CellsConstable will be assigned to serve a specified term with the DetentionServices Section, Cell Management Unit (see Conditions of Employment below). Constables in the Community Policing Bureau fill a criticalfront-line role, enabling public safety at the community level.
TheseConstables work in daily partnership with local communities, stakeholders, SPSteam members, and other policing agencies (including Integrated Teams) topromote public safety, community engagement, and community well being tosupport the quality of life for citizens. This role carries legal powers to enable the maintenance oflaw and order and carries responsibility for making decisions in accordancewith theBC Police Act, exercising professional discretion, asappropriate to the role, in line with legal frameworks, and SPS policingguidelines. Constables are required to meet and maintain the highestprofessional standards required of their role, by conducting all actions in alegal, ethical, and justifiable manner to uphold the law and achieve the bestoutcomes in a wide range of situations/incidents.

Employment Status Regular
Full-Time Provide initial and ongoing frontline response to a widerange of incidents that may include complex and confrontational situations,assessing immediate risk, threat, and harm to determine a proportionateresponse in line with the law, policy, and guidance. Effectively engage with victims, witnesses, suspects, andthe vulnerable to provide initial support, direction towards relevant services,establish relationships, and gather information that supports greater publicsafety in accordance with equality, diversity, and human rights considerations. Maintain awareness of potential and actual risks toindividuals, taking appropriate action to protect and support those in need ofpublic protection.
Gather and handle information, intelligence, and evidence,from a variety of sources, in line with legislation, policies and guidance,taking the appropriate action to support investigations, law enforcement, andcriminal justice proceedings. Conduct first line analysis of information, intelligence,and evidence to determine significance, generate lines of enquiry, informdecision making and support evidence-based policing. Understands and supports the Bureau’s priorities andopportunities while working toward the long-range visions of the SPS.
Currently a serving police officer in Canada with exemplary policeservice and in good standing. A minimum of one year policing experience after graduation from adesignated police academy. As per the BCPPS, retiredpolice officers with less then three (3) years into retirement areeligible to apply (providing they had successfully completed the requiredpolice training from a recognized police academy, as noted above.
Up to date and current onall mandatory force options training requirements with their currentpolice department. Progressive education in arelated field or equivalent work experience, supplemented bycertifications and training demonstrating a track record of continuousdevelopment.
Community
PolicingExperience, including: Experience ininteraction with diverse communities. Able to proactively developeffective working relationships with the community, colleagues, and otherstakeholders, understanding their needs and concerns. Able to review and reflecton own performance objectively and to take steps to maintain and enhancecompetence and professional standards appropriate to the role.
Skilled in the use ofstandard IT packages, systems, and/or databases to fulfil rolerequirements. Demonstrated experience insupporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Able to obtain and maintainthe required level of security clearance.
Thefollowing education is an asset: ~ Degree, graduate degree, or recent career development in arelated field. Be able to work shifts (including extended workdays (12 hours) and rotating schedules 2 day/2 night 12-hourshift rotation),fully operational, and fit for duty. Familiar with court processes including bailhearings.
Working with community partners such as Roc Doc,Surrey Pre-trial, Surrey Sheriffs, CBSA and Crown Counsel Preparing reports including police statements andrelease documentation Working with other police agencies, integratedunits, and other specialty sections Licensed and able to operate a Police vehicle and attend calls for service. Trained and able to engage the public in a variety ofcircumstances, including physical contact if required. Successful applicants must obtain and maintain the required levelof Security Clearance.
Successful applicants must complete 12 months of probation beforethey are eligible for lateral transfer or promotion.
Pleasenote: Substantive Corporals who are hired as Constables with SPS will be paidat 115% of SPS’s First Class Constable rate*, providing they have at leasteight years of policing service. They must pass the Sergeant exam and completeSPS Sergeant training modules to qualify as an Acting Sergeant and to beeligible for promotion.
