Posting period: October 1 – 15, 2026 Deadline to Apply: October 15, 2026 Salary: $11 824/ course (including vacation pay). The Department of Jewish Studies is inviting applications to teach a course in winter 2027. Preference will be given to the qualified applicant with the most priority points.

JWST 381 - God and Devil in Modern Yiddish Literature An exploration of some of the central themes in Yiddish literature: religious faith and doubt; the nature of good and evil; and the role of fear - both awe of the divine and terror of the demonic.

We will discuss Yiddish writers' use of East European Jewish folklore, the influence of Christian culture, as well as the effects of secularization, mass emigration, and the Holocaust. Readings will include works by major Yiddish writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including I. L.

Peretz, Sholem Aleichem, and Isaac Bashevis Singer.



January 5 – April 14, 2027: Monday and Wednesday (4:05 pm – 5:25 pm) Leacock room 15 Teaching Qualification Requirements:

- Education: PhD in Jewish Studies or literature, with a focus on Yiddish language and culture.
- Experience: Experience teaching Yiddish literature in universities and/or colleges This course will be taught by one instructor in-person.
