Duties
- Develop and update model evaluation programs in python, comparing HTAP multi-model output to measurements and reanalysis datasets of traditional air pollutants and short-lived climate forcers.
- Compute model performance metrics and investigate reasons for model biases.
- Intercompare HTAP multi-models’ future projections, providing information on the range of potential future results and their impacts.
- Produce figures and tables for scientific publications.
- If time allows, investigate other scientific topics with the HTAP datasets, such as aerosol-cloud interactions, radiative forcing, health impacts, source attribution, etc.
Work environment The students will work on multi-model data evaluation and analysis in the context of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (HTAP, htap.org). HTAP is an international scientific cooperative effort to improve the understanding of intercontinental transport of air pollution. HTAP3 multi-model experiments, include “OPNS” on ozone, particulate matter, and deposition, and “Fires” on multi-pollutant wildfire impacts. The students will download and analyze model output and measurements from several sources using ECCC’s supercomputer resources. They will compare atmospheric model output to several measurement-based datasets to determine model performance of air pollutant distributions and related variables. They will also intercompare models’ future projections of air pollution under various scenarios, and come to conclusions related to model performance, reasons for model biases, suggestions for improvement, and degree of confidence in model predictions.
