Women’s Apparel Designer — Controlled Insanity
Compensation: $5,000 per month
Monthly scope: Two women’s collections totaling 20 fully developed designs and complete tech packs.
About the Role
Controlled Insanity is looking for an experienced Women’s Apparel Designer to develop our women’s fitness and lifestyle collections—from original concepts and silhouettes through detailed tech packs and sample refinement.
You must understand how women’s clothing should fit, feel, and perform, with a strong awareness of the preferences of women ages 18–30 in the fitness industry. We need someone who combines creative direction with technical expertise and can work directly with manufacturers to bring each design to life.
Our style references include DFYNE, ASRV, Gymshark, YoungLA, Oner Active, and Aritzia. You should understand these brands’ approach to fit, quality, and styling while developing original designs that reflect Controlled Insanity’s identity.
Key Responsibilities
Collection Design and Development
- Develop two coordinated drops per month, totaling 20 women’s apparel designs.
- Create original concepts, silhouettes, sketches, colorways, fabric recommendations, and construction details.
- Design pieces that balance flattering fit, comfort, performance, and the Controlled Insanity aesthetic.
- Present ideas for approval and incorporate feedback within the agreed monthly schedule.
Complete Tech Packs
- Deliver 20 manufacturer-ready tech packs each month alongside the approved designs.
- Include technical drawings, measurement specifications, sizing and grading requirements, fabric and trim details, construction instructions, artwork placement, labels, and finishing requirements.
- Provide enough detail for manufacturers to accurately quote, sample,
and produce each garment.
- Maintain organized files and update tech packs as sample revisions are approved.
Manufacturer Sourcing and Communication
- Introduce Controlled Insanity to reputable manufacturers with proven experience producing high-quality women’s activewear and lifestyle apparel.
- Help evaluate manufacturing capabilities, quality, minimum order quantities, pricing, and lead times.
- Communicate directly with manufacturers to clarify specifications, resolve questions, and coordinate sample development.
- Track sampling progress and provide clear updates on outstanding decisions, revisions, and timelines.
Fit and Sample Quality
- Review samples against the approved concept and tech pack, including fit, measurements, fabric, construction, and finishing.
- Provide detailed revision instructions and follow through until samples meet the agreed standards.
- Understand female body proportions, size consistency, fabric stretch and recovery, support, coverage, and comfort.
- Apply thoughtful design choices, including avoiding front seams on leggings and shorts where specified.
- Identify concerns such as sheerness, poor waistband fit, restrictive seams, inadequate support, and inconsistent sizing before production approval.
Required Experience and Skills
- Proven experience designing women’s fitness, activewear, or premium lifestyle apparel.
- A strong portfolio showing original silhouettes, completed tech packs, and finished garments.
- Demonstrated experience developing garments from concept through sampling.
- Robust knowledge of women’s fit, sizing, grading, fabrics, and garment construction.
- Established manufacturer relationships and the ability to recommend reputable production partners.
- Strong understanding of the fitness industry and our target customer: women ages 18–30.
- Excellent communication, responsiveness, organization, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage overlapping design and sampling schedules while meeting deadlines.
Monthly Deliverables and Compensation The monthly fee is $5,000, equivalent to $250 per completed design and tech pack across 20 pieces.
This scope includes original design development, complete tech packs, manufacturer communication, sample review, and necessary design and specification revisions. All 20 designs and initial tech packs must be completed within each monthly cycle, organized into two drops. Sample timelines will be coordinated separately based on manufacturer lead times.
