Are you passionate about fitness, strength training, and helping women become stronger and more confident?

Are you looking for an internship where you can develop real-world coaching skills, receive mentorship from experienced fitness professionals, and gain hands-on experience in the fitness industry?

The MOVE Coach Academy is a structured 12-16 week internship and coach-development program for students and emerging fitness professionals who want to take what they've learned and put it into practice.

You'll work alongside experienced MOVE coaches, receive ongoing mentorship and feedback, and progressively develop your skills through:

OBSERVE → ASSIST → COACH → LEAD

As your skills, confidence, and competencies develop, you'll have opportunities to move from observation into hands-on coaching and progressively greater coaching responsibility.

MOVE is a Toronto-based women's strength and fitness club dedicated to helping women build strength, confidence, and lifelong healthy habits.

Since 2017, we've created a women-first approach to fitness built around expert coaching, progressive strength training, personal connection, empowerment, and community.

What You'll Learn & ExperienceCoaching

Develop practical coaching skills across MOVE's different training environments, including women's group fitness, personal training, semi-private training, and our Teen Girls Strength Program.

You'll have opportunities to

- Shadow and learn from experienced MOVE coaches
- Learn class and session flow, preparation, and organization
- Develop coaching presence, communication, and confidence
- Practice effective cueing, movement demonstrations, and corrections
- Learn movement assessment and exercise selection
- Develop skills in exercise progressions, regressions, and modifications
- Learn how to coach individuals with different goals, abilities, and experience levels
- Develop client communication, accountability, and relationship-building skills
- Lead warm-ups and designated portions of training sessions
- Gain progressively more hands-on coaching experience as your skills develop
- Work toward greater coaching independence as competencies are demonstrated and where appropriate

Strength & Conditioning Programming

Learn not only what to coach, but why it's being programmed.

You'll gain exposure to

- MOVE's strength and conditioning programming principles
- Workout intent and exercise selection
- Progressive overload
- Movement balance and exercise sequencing
- Scaling and modifications for individual needs
- Weekly programming review and coach preparation
- How programming can be adapted across group, personal, and semi-private training environments

Empowerment & Community

Develop a deeper understanding of what it means to coach within a women-first fitness environment.

You'll learn about

- Women-centred coaching principles
- Creating supportive, inclusive, and empowering training environments
- Coaching women across different fitness levels and stages of life
- Building confidence through strength training
- The role of education, encouragement, and accountability
- Creating meaningful connections with members
- MOVE community events, workshops, and initiatives when available

Member Experience & Success

Great coaches don't just coach exercises—they build relationships.

You'll learn how to

- Welcome and connect with members
- Understand member goals and motivations
- Support new member onboarding
- Develop strong coach-member relationships
- Create accountability and encourage consistency
- Contribute to member engagement and retention
- Deliver the exceptional member experience MOVE is known for

Fitness Business Experience

You'll also gain exposure to the day-to-day operations of a boutique fitness club, including:

- Member services
- Scheduling and studio systems
- Team communication and collaboration
- Studio operations
- Community engagement
- Marketing and content
- Business development

How the Coach Academy Works The MOVE Coach Academy is designed around progressive learning and responsibility.

You'll begin by learning MOVE's coaching standards, class structure, programming philosophy, and member experience.

As you demonstrate competency and confidence, you'll progress into more hands-on coaching opportunities, which may include:

- Leading warm-ups
- Demonstrating and teaching movements
- Coaching individual exercises
- Providing appropriate movement corrections
- Leading designated training blocks
- Coaching portions of group, personal, or semi-private sessions
- Opportunities to coach more independently as competencies are demonstrated and where appropriate

Mentorship, feedback, and coach development are provided throughout the program.

Who We're Looking For

You don't need to already be an experienced coach.

We're looking for people with the attitude, energy, curiosity, and potential to become great coaches.

Students studying Fitness & Health Promotion, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health & Wellness, or related programs are encouraged to apply.

College and university students seeking a co-op, internship, or field placement are welcome to apply.

Internship Details

Program Duration: Approximately 12–16 weeks

Time Commitment: Approximately 10–15 hours per week

Total Hours: Typically 120–240 hours, depending on academic placement requirements and individual schedule

Students completing the Coach Academy as part of an academic placement may have their schedule and total placement hours adjusted to meet the requirements of their educational institution.

For students completing the Coach Academy as part of an academic placement, required hours, learning objectives, evaluations, and scheduling may be coordinated with the student's educational institution.

Most importantly, our goal is for you to finish the Academy with greater confidence actually coaching people and a better understanding of what it takes to build a successful career in the fitness industry.

Interns who demonstrate MOVE's coaching standards, professionalism, work ethic, and alignment with our culture may be considered for future paid coaching opportunities as positions become available. Completion of the internship does not guarantee employment.
