Future Science Leaders Teaching and Laboratory Assistant Job Category: Program Education Permanent Part-Time Position: Future Science Leaders Teaching and Laboratory Assistant Reports to: Program Manager, Future Science Leaders Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion.
Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province. As part of our team, you will join a diverse community that acknowledges everyone’s unique talents and empowers people to do what is right for our visitors, our members, our volunteers and each other.
As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings.
Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.
Future Science
Leaders (FSL) is Science World’s flagship youth science and leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of BC’s most talented students. Students meet and learn from BC’s top science, technology, and business leaders and are supported by a team of staff and volunteer mentors.
Working as a member of the Extracurricular Programs Team, the Future Science Leaders (FSL) Teaching and Laboratory Assistant perform duties to support both classroom and laboratory learning in the Year 1 program and helps to create an engaging and positive learning space. The FSL Year 1 (Discover) program invites grade 10 and 11 students to participate in learning and skill-building activities in a wide variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, Math) topics led by FSL staff and by guest experts. Through working on inquiry projects in peer groups, they develop a foundation in research, analysis and communication skills.
The FSL Teaching Assistant must be comfortable working with and mentoring high school students (Grades 10-11, class size 20-25) who are learning STEAM topics at university level. No previous experience is necessary as a teaching or laboratory assistant.
Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator, to welcome students into the building Help to facilitate classroom and lab lessons by activities such as distributing supplies, offering guidance and mentorship to students, as well as documenting sessions through photography Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator to prepare materials for laboratory activities, clean and maintain an orderly work environment, and model correct procedures to students when appropriate Support other FSL programs when needed, including chaperoning field trips and supporting FSL events (Winter Science Nights, Spring Student Showcase) Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World Over the age of 18 Must be self-motivated, flexible, and enthusiastic An undergraduate degree in a STEAM field (completed or ongoing) is an asset Experience working with youth is an asset Being an FSL student alumni is an asset After successfully completing probation, will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP/TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
