Grant Writing & Communications Consultant
Freelance / Contract Opportunity
Ameiko is a boutique fractional firm that gives small and growing nonprofits access to an experienced fundraising and communications support without the cost of a full-time hire. We step in alongside leadership teams to research funders, write proposals, strengthen donor communications, and build the systems organisations need to grow. Our work spans youth, community, conservation, and social-impact organisations, and we focus on practical support that fits where each organization is today.
What we’re looking for:
We are looking for an experienced Grant Writer & Communications Consultant to work with us across a small portfolio of nonprofit organisations and mission-driven projects. This is a versatile, project-based opportunity for someone who enjoys working across different organizations, causes and priorities. The right person will be able to step into an organization, quickly understand its mission and funding needs, and turn that information into strong grant proposals, donor communications and compelling written content.
You would work across approximately four projects, with the potential for ongoing work as needs and projects develop.
What You’ll Do
Grant Writing & Fundraising
- Research and identify relevant foundation, corporate and institutional funding opportunities
- Develop and maintain grant prospect lists
- Research prospective donors and funders, including their priorities, giving history and application requirements
- Write compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, concept notes and funding applications
- Develop grant narratives, budgets and supporting materials in collaboration with organizational teams
- Manage grant calendars, deadlines and reporting requirements
- Support donor communications, case statements and other fundraising materials
- Help organizations strengthen their overall fundraising strategy and systems
Communications
- Write and edit website content, newsletters, donor communications and organizational materials
- Develop compelling stories and impact-focused content
- Edit and improve existing communications and fundraising materialsameiko
- Help ensure messaging is clear, consistent and aligned with each organization's voice
- Support communications audits and content development where needed
- Assist with basic website content updates
Research & Strategy
- Conduct nonprofit and funder research
- Identify new fundraising and partnership opportunities
- Research potential individual donors, foundations, corporations and other funding sources
- Help develop prospecting and relationship-building strategies
- Provide practical recommendations to strengthen fundraising and communications
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- Strong professional grant writing experience
- Significant nonprofit experience
- Excellent research, writing and editing skills
- Ability to independently research funders and identify strong prospects
- Solid understanding of nonprofit fundraising and donor engagement
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Ability to work independently across multiple organizations and projects
- Comfortable working with different organizational voices, missions and audiences
Ideally, you have:
- 7–10 years of grant writing/fundraising experience
- Experience working with foundations, corporations and institutional funders
- Experience with prospect research and donor mapping
- Experience developing fundraising strategies and systems
- Experience writing communications for nonprofits or social-impact organizations
- Experience working with small or growing nonprofits where you may need to wear multiple hats
- Experience with website platforms such as Squarespace, WordPress or similar
- Familiarity with tools such as Google Workspace, Canva, CRM systems and project- management platforms
- Experience working remotely with multiple clients or organizations
The Right Person
- You are a strong writer, but you're also a strategic thinker and researcher.
- You don't need to be given a detailed brief for every task. You can take a general direction, conduct the research, identify what is needed and come back with a strong first draft or recommendation.
- You're comfortable moving between a grant proposal in the morning, donor research in the afternoon and editing website copy later that day.ameiko
- You are also comfortable working with organizations at different stages of development, including smaller nonprofits that may not yet have large fundraising or communications teams.
- Most importantly, you’re reliable, organized, curious and genuinely interested in mission-driven work.
Work Structure
- This is a flexible freelance/contract position, not a traditional full-time role.
- Work will vary depending on active projects and organizational needs. Some weeks may involve several hours of grant writing and prospect research, while other weeks may focus more heavily on communications, editing or strategy.
- The ability to work across multiple projects and manage your own time is essential.
- There is potential for ongoing work and increased hours over time for the right person.
