HR AND HEALTH & SAFETY PROFESSIONAL
Full-Time | Remote | Candidates across Canada
Salary: $75,000-$85,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications
About Dunk & Associates
Since 2000, Dunk & Associates Inc. has supported employers across Canada with Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety, workplace compliance and training. Through our professional services and Systems 24-7 platform, we provide practical advice, employer resources and implementation support that help organizations build safer, compliant and effective workplaces.
Our mission: To create safer, compliant and more dynamic workplaces.
About the Position
We are seeking an experienced HR and Health & Safety Professional to join our Professional Services team. This is a client-facing consulting and advisory role. It is not an internal HR or Health & Safety position for Dunk & Associates.
You will work directly with employers, owners, managers and workplace leaders on both Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety matters. We prefer a professional with balanced experience in both fields; however, a candidate whose experience is stronger in Health & Safety may be an excellent fit if they also have substantial, practical HR experience.
Excellent customer service is essential. The successful candidate will listen carefully, ask effective questions, establish the facts, research what applies and explain practical options suited to the client's workplace. You must be able to build trust, manage ongoing client relationships and help employers move from advice and documents to effective workplace practices.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Professional Services, you will:
Client Advice and Relationship Support
- Provide practical, responsive HR and Health & Safety advice to employers, owners, managers and organizational leaders across a range of workplaces and industries.
- Listen to the client's concerns, ask effective questions, review relevant information and documentation, identify what is known and what is still needed, and help the client determine appropriate next steps.
- Explain legislative requirements, workplace risks and practical options in clear language while recognizing when specialized expertise or external legal advice is required.
- Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships through reliable service, sound professional judgment, timely follow-up and accurate client records.
- Support clients through difficult, sensitive or urgent workplace situations while remaining objective, professional and focused on workable solutions.
Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Support
- Advise employers on Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities, program requirements and practical implementation, and research and support extending across Canada.
- Assist with hazard identification, risk assessments, workplace inspections, incident investigations, corrective actions and the review or implementation of Health & Safety programs.
- Review workplace practices, programs and documentation to identify compliance gaps, operational risks and practical opportunities for improvement.
- Support employers with supervisor responsibilities, worker information and training, workplace violence and harassment requirements, incident reporting and other workplace-specific Health & Safety needs.
- Participate in virtual and, when required, onsite client meetings, workplace assessments and implementation activities.
- Assist with workers' compensation matters and coordinated accommodation and return-to-work processes where HR and Health & Safety responsibilities intersect.
Human Resources Advisory Support
- Advise employers on employee relations, performance management, corrective action, progressive discipline, attendance and absenteeism.
- Provide guidance on medical leaves, disability management, accommodation and return-to-work matters.
- Support terminations, restructuring and other employment transitions, and review employment agreements and proposed changes to employment terms and conditions.
- Help employers address employment standards, human rights, workplace violence and harassment concerns, and prepare for difficult employee conversations.
- Apply previous workplace investigation experience when supporting or participating in investigations involving harassment, employee conduct, incidents or other workplace concerns.
Research and Resource Development
- Research and monitor legislation, regulations, regulator guidance, standards and recognized practices affecting HR and Health & Safety across Canada.
- Interpret research carefully, confirm the jurisdiction and workplace context, and distinguish legal requirements from recommended practices.
- Develop, review and revise policies, procedures, programs, forms, documentation tools, employer guides, playbooks and other practical workplace resources.
- Review client programs and resource sets to identify gaps, inconsistencies and implementation needs, and provide clear recommendations.
- Help clients implement workplace processes and use Systems 24-7 resources and tools effectively rather than simply providing documents.
Training and Skilled Collaboration
- Develop and deliver webinars, virtual training, educational presentations and other learning resources for employers, supervisors and workers.
- Collaborate with other HR and Health & Safety professionals on client matters, professional reviews, resource development and service improvement.
- Contribute to the development of new programs, services and tools and perform other related professional duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Capabilities
- At least 10 years of combined progressive professional experience in Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety, including substantial experience providing direct advice or support to employers, managers or organizational leaders.
- Demonstrated practical experience in both HR and Health & Safety. Stronger Health & Safety expertise is particularly valued, provided the candidate also has substantial HR knowledge and experience.
- Strong customer service and relationship-management skills, including the ability to earn trust, understand client needs, manage expectations and provide reliable follow-through.
- Practical knowledge of Ontario employment standards, human rights and Occupational Health & Safety requirements, with the research skills needed to determine and apply requirements in other Canadian jurisdictions.
- Experience with employee relations, performance and discipline, medical leaves, accommodation, return to work and sensitive employment decisions.
- Experience participating in or supporting workplace investigations involving HR, harassment, employee conduct,
incidents or Health & Safety concerns. Experience as the lead investigator is not required.
- Experience with hazard assessments, inspections, incident investigations, corrective actions and Health & Safety program development or implementation.
- Excellent communication, active-listening, questioning, research, writing and analytical skills, together with sound professional judgment.
- Strong organization and time management, proficiency with Microsoft 365 and modern technology platforms, and the ability to work independently while collaborating and applying professional feedback.
Preferred Qualifications and Additional Assets The following are preferred and will strengthen an application, but they are not mandatory when a candidate can demonstrate the required experience, knowledge and capabilities:
- A CHRP, CHRL, CRSP, CHSC, NCSO or another recognized Canadian HR or Health & Safety designation.
- A diploma or degree in Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety, Business or a related field.
- Previous consulting or multi-client advisory experience.
- Experience with the WSIB Health and Safety Excellence program, workers' compensation claims management, training delivery or professional resource development.
- Bilingual English and French communication skills.
Work Environment
This is a full-time remote position. Candidates located anywhere in Canada will be considered. Employees working outside the Niagara Region must be able to attend the Niagara office at least twice annually. Occasional additional travel may be required for client support, workplace assessments, meetings, training or conferences.
A dedicated professional home office, reliable high-speed internet, a valid driver's license and occasional access to a vehicle are required. Employees provide their own technology and equipment, except for a desktop phone supplied by the Company.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary of $75,000-$85,000, based on experience, qualifications, professional designations and demonstrated competencies.
- A $200 monthly home office expense allowance, paid through regular payroll, to assist with technology and other work-related home office expenses.
- Extended health and dental benefits after six months of employment and an RRSP or TFSA matching program.
- Three weeks' annual vacation after one year of service, accrued during the first year and available for use as earned.
- Professional development and opportunities for advancement as they become available.
