We are looking for an Indigenous Outpatient Substance Use Counsellor who is compassionate, dependable, culturally respectful, and committed to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use.
About the Role The Outpatient Substance Use Counsellor provides counselling, assessment, case management, crisis support, referrals, group programming, and prevention education to community members.
This position involves working both in the office and within the community. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clients, families, staff, and community service providers to support clients through different stages of treatment.
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Treatment Planning
- Complete client intake assessments.
- Develop individualized treatment plans collaboratively with clients.
- Complete regular treatment-plan reviews.
- Maintain accurate client records and documentation.
Case Management
- Support clients through pre-treatment, active treatment, and post-treatment.
- Coordinate referrals and connections to appropriate services.
- Participate in integrated care planning and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Support transitions between services.
Counselling & Client Support
- Provide individual one-to-one counselling.
- Facilitate group counselling.
- Provide daily drop-in support.
- Provide crisis intervention and respond appropriately to critical situations.
- Use evidence-informed counselling approaches, including motivational interviewing.
- Utilize cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based approaches where appropriate and within professional scope.
Group Programming
- Facilitate a weekly early-engagement group for new clients.
- Facilitate a weekly group for individuals in recovery or experiencing reliable substance use.
- Facilitate groups for parents and caregivers.
Community Education & Prevention
- Develop prevention plans and activities based on community needs.
- Provide substance-use and harm-reduction education.
- Participate in community awareness and prevention initiatives.
- Provide education to targeted community populations.
What We're Looking For The successful candidate will have:
- A degree, equivalent education, or a combination of education and training in counselling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
- Training in trauma- and resiliency-informed practice.
- Training in suicide response.
- Training in motivational interviewing.
- Training or experience in harm reduction.
- Knowledge of and/or lived experience with Indigenous cultural practices is preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a busy environment.
- Reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and a respectful approach to working with community members.
- The ability to respond appropriately and calmly to crisis situations.
Required
- Successful completion of a Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Record Check.
Considered an Asset
- Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Experience working in substance-use, mental-health, harm-reduction, or community-based services.
- Knowledge of local community resources and referral services.
