About Northiana:

Northiana is a Vancouver-based R&D; company, founded in 2023, developing Continuous Multilayered Encapsulation (CME) — a technology that moves viscous fluids such as heavy crude, bitumen, and mine tailings through existing pipelines at a fraction of the pumping pressure they would otherwise require. CME forms a high-strength hydrogel capsule around the fluid, cutting drag and abrasion inside the line for more efficient flow, lower energy use, and less wear on infrastructure already in the ground.

The company is now moving from validated results to industrial scale, building a pilot facility in Vancouver and preparing a field demonstration on a commercial pipeline with a major Canadian midstream partner. The team is small and much of the equipment is built rather than bought, so the people we hire will have their hands on the hardware and the chemistry from the start. We value curiosity, collaboration, and ownership, and prior oil and gas experience is not required — we hire for capability and attitude.

The Role

Mechanical Engineer, EIT

Location: Vancouver, BC — pilot facility

Reports to: VP of Product Development

Type: Full-time

Northiana is looking for an early-career Mechanical Engineer (EIT) to help bring our Vancouver pilot facility online and to develop the control and data acquisition systems that run it. The role will involve commissioning and troubleshooting pumps, flow and pressure instrumentation, CME injector assemblies, as well as developing LabVIEW-based control logic for buoyancy control and end-of-pipe equipment operation.

Detailed engineering and procurement for major equipment are handled with external engineering partners.

This role covers the development side of the work: the modifications, test hardware, and control strategies that we need to try, adjust, and optimize ourselves, and the operation of the system during test campaigns. In addition, the role would include minor design projects for inhouse manufacturing. Under the supervision of the Engineering Lead, the engineer will plan and execute tasks, capture and interpret experimental data, prepare technical documentation, and present findings to the broader team. We are looking for a self-motivated, proactive individual with strong practical instincts and a track record of designing, building, and debugging real hardware. Please note that this role is in person and not remote.

Primary Responsibilities:

● Commission and troubleshoot the pilot system, including pumps, flow and pressure instrumentation, injector assemblies and end-of-pipe separation equipment.

● Develop and maintain LabVIEW-based control and data acquisition for the pilot facility.

● Support development of control logic for buoyancy control and end-of-pipe operation.

● Contribute mechanical design and fabrication support for test hardware and system modifications.

● Operate the pilot system during test campaigns, and collect, reduce, and interpret the resulting data.

● Prepare technical documentation and present results to the team.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

● Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, or a similar discipline.

● Zero to two years of experience, or substantial co-op experience in a hands-on engineering environment.

● Working experience with LabVIEW, or a comparable control and data acquisition environment.

● Experience with Solidworks and CAM software.

● Proficiency in mechanical design and the preparation of fabrication drawings.

● Hands on experience designing, building, and troubleshooting equipment.

● Eligible to register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

● Must have good verbal and written communication skills.

● Experience setting up control systems and integrating sensors is considered an asset.

● Exposure to fluid systems, pumps, or flow measurement is considered an asset.

Northiana is dedicated to helping its employees grow and develop technical and soft skills in an innovative and cooperative environment. Northiana is an equal opportunity employer with an inclusive culture. We thank all applicants in advance for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
