Hiring Unit: Faculty of Law Course Number: LAWG 273 Course Title: Family Law Course Credits: 3 1 Instructor Term: Winter 2027 Course Schedule: Friday 0835-1125 (Student Affairs Office will contact you if there is a change to the date/time) Location: Chancellor Day Hall Course Description: Using the Divorce Act, the Civil Code, and other statutes, we will address the various issues raised in family law: conjugality, filiation, spousal and child support obligations, parenting time, as well as international aspects of family law. Throughout the course, we will take a critical and pragmatic look in order to probe the limits and opportunities for improvement in family law. Since family violence is an issue that unfortunately comes up frequently in family law (both in judgments and in recent reforms), we will discuss it often.

During the quarter, we will follow a fictional couple from the formalization of their relationship, the birth of a child, through the breakup, and the litigation that will follow. Through this exercise, you will practice the drafting of legal opinions and a request for a safeguard order.

This course is suitable for those interested in: the practice of law and litigation more generally; social issues; family law.

TQR: At a minimum, a first degree in law. Several years of significant practice or professional experience, in the relevant area;
