Can you spot a missing dimension from across the room? Do you get equally excited about a beautiful material palette and a perfectly resolved millwork detail and impeccable IFC package? Does “we’ll figure it out on site” make you just a little nervous?
Good. Us too.
Jessica Bremner Design is looking for an experienced Lead Interior Designer to join our studio in Deep Cove, North Vancouver.
We are looking for someone to help us up the ante and can lead.
Someone who is an experience residential designer who can lead projects, guide a team, build confidence with a client, work confidently alongside trades/consultants and navigate the technical realities of construction.
Equally we want someone who wants to be a part of a team.
We are passionate about the clients we serve, the designs we create and the people who stand beside us. If you are looking to work with a small but mighty design firm, do beautiful work, lead your own projects and have some fun sprinkled along the way, keep reading.
A little about us
Jessica Bremner Design is an award-winning residential interior design studio based in North Vancouver. We work on complex renovations, custom construction and personal interiors throughout the Lower Mainland. Our approach considers both the aesthetics of a space and how that space functions and makes people feel.
We are a small, collaborative team: we share ideas, ask questions, solve problems together and care about the work we put into the world. We take our work seriously, without taking ourselves too seriously.
What we are looking for
You know residential construction and design. You have been doing this long enough that you can confidently take a project and run with it - from concept through construction and everything that happens in between.
You can lead a client meeting, work directly with contractors and trades, manage competing priorities, make decisions and keep a project moving. When something goes sideways (because sometimes it will), you are someone who steps in, communicates and figures out what happens next.
You are able to work closely with Jess to establish the overall concept and creative direction, then drive the ownership of developing, documenting and carrying that vision through the project. We need someone who can hold onto the creative vision, work through the technical details, support the people around them and help bring the whole project successfully across the finish line.
Someone who thinks independently and takes initiative.
Most importantly you bring calm, positive vibes. You can reassure an anxious client, build confidence with the construction team and, support the team with heart.
The design things you will be doing:
- Lead complex residential renovations and custom homes through all phases of design and construction
- Prepare and present thoughtful concepts, space plans and material selections
- Manage day-to-day client communication, meetings, decisions and follow-up
- Coordinate with contractors, trades, architects, engineers, millworkers and other consultants
- Confidently attend site meetings and work through construction details with the project team
- Produce, manage and review permit and construction-document packages
- Review drawing sets prepared by other designers and provide comprehensive markups
- Develop detailed millwork, lighting, electrical, finish and interior-elevation packages
- Monitor schedules, deliverables, project scope and design hours
- Participate in preliminary pricing, value engineering and scope-alignment discussions
- Identify risks, coordination issues and scope creep before they become expensive surprises
- Respond to construction questions and help troubleshoot practical solutions
- Delegate clearly and mentor junior and intermediate designers
- Support site reviews, deficiency walks and project closeout
- Help strengthen JBD’s design standards, systems and technical knowledge
The experience things you have:
- Minimum of 7 years of residential interior-design experience in Canada
- Significant experience with custom homes and complex residential renovations
- A diploma or degree in Interior Design or a related discipline, (BCIT preferred)
- Advanced AutoCAD and construction-documentation skills
- Strong knowledge of residential construction, millwork and architectural detailing
- Experience producing and reviewing permit and IFC drawing packages
- Knows the ins and outs of the BC Building Code and municipal permit processes
- Confident communicator
- Experienced in project management applications
- Strong design judgement, space-planning and material-selection skills
We would especially like to meet you if:
- Have strong residential renovation and current construction experience (have we said that enough?)
- Enjoy mentoring and helping others grow
- Have a wicked attention to detail and follow through
- Are organized, accountable and detail oriented (like, sees the missing dimension before it leaves the studio detailed)
- Have a sparkle in your eye when you talk about design
- Bring a little personality and humour to the day
Why Jessica Bremner Design? JBD is a small, collaborative studio where each person has a meaningful role in the work. We share wins, lessons learned and snacks in a cozy Deep Cove studio. We value the lived experience of women and seek to uplift, support and inspire those in our orbit.
You will have the opportunity to lead substantial residential projects, contribute creatively, mentor other designers and help shape the next stage of the studio.
If this seems like your vibe, and you are ready to bring your experience, leadership and point of view to a team that wants to keep getting better, we would love to hear from you.
