The Salvation

The Custodian position provides required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service to custodial standards ensuring that the building environment is healthy and comfortable. Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces Cleans washroom facilities and shower rooms Supplies toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items Performs more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during non-peak programming periods Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s) and on janitorial carts Follows established procedures and documentation for inventory tracking Informs Custodial Supervisor of general repairs and maintenance items required Lifts and moves furniture as requested Works independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standards Attends mandatory training and specialized work training when scheduled Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.
Attends meetings as requested by Director of Facilities or Custodial Supervisor Location is in our Centre of Hope, downtown Calgary in a men’s residential shelter, indoors and outdoors.
Exposed to weather as work is done indoors and outdoors in all seasons. The work environment is typically in the entire facility and property designated.
Moving furniture, pushing, and pulling, as well as lifting items up to 50 lbs. Exposure to odours, toxic chemicals, electrical hazards and infectious diseases. May deal with aggressive people and may experience verbal, and less likely, physical attacks Risk of needle pricks, back injuries, and repetitive strain injuries.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements At least three months of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills Moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment Background in handling, mixing and safely using cleaning chemicals A strong sense of initiative and responsibility in working alone General knowledge of workplace safety practices, policies, and procedures (e.g., equipment safety, hazard communication, personal protective equipment use) to ensure performance of protected work practices. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
