Employment Type: Full time, Permanent
The Opportunity
Our client is a national managing general agent (MGA) with a well-established Property team and a growing book of commercial business across Canada, searching for an experienced Property Underwriter to help lead the next stage of the team's growth.
This is a technical underwriting role first and a leadership pipeline role second: the organization is looking for someone who wants to own a book of business, bring ideas to the table, and grow into greater responsibility, including, over time, people leadership, rather than someone looking for a purely production-based seat.
What You'll Be Doing
- Underwrite current and renewal commercial property business, with a focus on primary and complex risks up to roughly $20M in total insured value (TIV)
- Take ownership of property schedules, multi-location and multi-family/apartment risk, and rental/residential portfolios as well as other commercial property risks
- Assess and price complex risk, including claims-mitigation strategy as part of the underwriting decision
- Help grow the book into larger and more complex risk classes as capacity and appetite expand
- Coordinate with the liability and construction underwriting teams on shared accounts, since most property policies also carry liability and legal-expense coverage
- Build and maintain relationships with broker and market partners, and bring forward ideas to expand the team's appetite and product set
- Support training of more junior underwriters, with a genuine path toward formal people-management responsibility
- Maintain underwriting files and documentation in line with company and regulatory standards
What They're Looking For
Must-haves:
- Solid commercial property underwriting background — flexible in the 5–8+ year range, with technical depth valued over years on paper
- MGA experience strongly preferred; primary-market underwriters open to the MGA side are still worth a conversation
- Hands-on experience with property schedules and larger or more complex commercial risk
- An entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset, comfortable proposing changes and taking ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do
Nice-to-haves:
- Prior exposure to the West Coast property market
- Experience underwriting renovation projects
- An interest in. or prior experience with people management; this is treated as a growth path rather than a day-one expectation
- Familiarity with EPIC and/or Policy Works
Location & Flexibility
The client is prioritizing the right technical background over geography. Fully remote candidates are genuinely welcome, with the expectation of coming together periodically for key market events or team meetings.
- Base salary 90 to 110K, commensurate with experience
- Performance-based annual bonus
- 4 weeks' vacation
- A salary review is triggered if/when the role expands into people management
- RRSP match
