The work location for Laboratory Services positions is the laboratory facility at 3484 Limebank Rd., Ottawa. Due to the nature of the work, physical presence onsite is required.
Applicants must reside or be willing to relocate to the National Capital Region (NCR). Relocation assistance may be offered to a successful candidate residing outside of the National Capital Region.

We also implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
CNSC operates a modern laboratory with internationally recognized experts and a proven track record for valid and reliable results. The Laboratory Services Division (LSD) currently maintains two areas of excellence: radiation instrumentation calibration and sample analysis, including inorganic chemistry and radiochemistry. Our analytical services support various programs within the CNSC, such as environmental monitoring, compliance, nuclear safeguards and forensics.
The CNSC laboratory analyzes various types of samples collected during inspections and environmental monitoring activities. These samples are analyzed for radionuclides and hazardous elements/substances, as well as water quality parameters (e.g., pH, total dissolved solids). The results of the various analyses are made available to CNSC staff to support independent verification of licensee programs and inform future compliance plan activities.

What you'll do The CNSC is looking for a Laboratory Technical Officer to:
- Prepare incoming samples for analysis and perform sample measurements
- Assist in performing QC/QA checks and calibration of analytical instruments, as well as carry out routine maintenance
- Assist Analysts with new method development and validation
- Help train CNSC staff in proper environmental sampling protocols and prepare sample kits and supplies for CNSC inspectors
- Assist in performing analytical work on swipe and environmental samples
- Assist with the inventory management of laboratory supplies, chemicals and field sampling equipment
Essential Qualifications:
Education:
University degree in chemistry or another closely related field
Language Requirements:
English essential
Experience:
- Preparing samples of various matrices (water, soil, vegetation, food, air) for chemical and/or radiochemical analyses
- Conducting routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, such as pH meters, vacuum pumps, water purification and glass manifold systems
Knowledge of:
- Qualitative and quantitative measurements
- Laboratory safety rules and practices, such as Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS)
- Radiation protection practices and procedures

Asset Qualification:
- Experience in analytical chemistry measurements, such as pH, ion chromatography, mass spectrometry, or X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
- Experience in radioanalytical techniques, such as liquid scintillation counting and gas proportional counting
- Master’s degree in chemistry or another closely related field
Operational Needs: All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
