As Senior
Producer, Live & Daily News, Weekend Late Audio you drive daily programming with a hyper-focus on live and breaking national and international news for our hourly radio news and podcast programs, Your World Tonight and The World This Hour. You bring an audience-first mindset to the role, shaping compelling content that plays equally well as a podcast as it does on terrestrial radio. You are expected to steer daily editorial meetings, stimulate creative discussions, and identify the most impactful stories and treatments for the day.
You react decisively to major developments, track stories in real time and reshape shows on the fly to ensure our audiences are getting the content they need to know, now. You support your colleagues across the CBC News system when it pivots to extended live coverage. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture. and actively teach advanced writing and producing skills.
You ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. Reporting to the Executive Producer of Live & Daily News, Weekends, you help meet CBC’s strategic goals, including working across platforms to meet audience needs no matter where they consume our content.
Based in Toronto, this is a full-time, permanent position.
The successful candidate will work a four-day compressed work week (Thursday to Sunday). You can expect some overtime, including early mornings and evenings when news is breaking. Determine story priorities, develop innovative content strategies, and expertly guide teams through live, breaking, and ongoing news coverage.
Guide the team on story length, deadlines, updates, and audio treatments.
Live Experience: Develop & practise a culture of embracing breaking news and leaning into developing stories with a disciplined focus on audience needs and CBC News strategy. Collaborate with broadcast, streaming and digital to ensure a full live experience across all platforms. Co‑ordinate resources and determine the look, style, and pace of the lineup to maintain consistency with network mandates.
Change Agent: Drives continuous improvement, agile and adaptable in transforming newsroom structures and roles and lead transitions. Collaborate across CBC News platforms to co‑ordinate content, such raw sound, clipped material and packaged audio items.
Team Leadership: Actively support staff development, provide ongoing constructive feedback and coaching. Connect regularly with senior leadership about staffing and scheduling requirements and team culture. Translate insights and data to guide content decisions to expand our reach to new and younger news consumers, and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians.
Experience: Minimum of seven years in broadcast journalism, with a university degree or college diploma in journalism,
audio production, or a related field. Proven experience producing live and breaking news programming, including production planning and resource co‑ordination.
Technical Proficiency: Mandatory experience taking programs to air, alongside highly developed audio production skills. Familiarity with technology including iNews, Dalet, Avid Media Central and Google tools for content creation, distribution, and planning. Exceptional problem‑solving skills to navigate fast‑moving, high‑pressure news situations.
You're adept at verifying and fact‑checking content. Superior coaching abilities to support developing journalists, veteran staff, and on‑air hosts. A deep commitment to public broadcasting, understanding of modern industry trends, ability to identify legal and ethical issues in journalism, and application of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
