Position Overview The Geospatial Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting, enhancing, and modernizing Auritas’ mission-critical enterprise geospatial systems within utility environments. This highly specialized role combines deep expertise in legacy GE Smallworld platforms with advanced development capabilities across the Esri ArcGIS ecosystem.
The Geospatial Systems Engineer maintains and enhances core Transmission and Distribution applications, including DAD, SAM, PowerGrid, SLIM, and DSIS, while developing modern geospatial applications using ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Experience Builder Developer Edition. This position also designs integrations between legacy and modern GIS platforms, supports strategic migration initiatives, and ensures geospatial systems remain reliable, scalable, secure, and aligned with utility operational requirements.
The role partners with utility operations, engineering, information technology, project leadership, and customer stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into sustainable geospatial solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
GE Smallworld Platform Administration
- Maintain, configure, administer, and enhance GE Smallworld Core Spatial Technology environments.
- Support Transmission and Distribution applications, including DAD, SAM, PowerGrid, SLIM, and related systems.
- Perform complex network modeling, spatial data management, and system administration within the Smallworld environment.
- Monitor system health, application performance, availability, and data integrity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues affecting utility network operations.
- Support Smallworld upgrades, patches, configuration changes, and lifecycle management activities.
- Maintain standards and procedures for Smallworld administration, development, deployment, and support.
- Coordinate with infrastructure, database, security, and operations teams to maintain stable production environments.
Magik Development & Customization
- Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain custom applications and system enhancements using Magik.
- Modify and extend Smallworld functionality to support utility business processes and operational requirements.
- Develop reusable Magik components, libraries, and tools.
- Review and optimize existing Magik code for performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Resolve defects and production issues within customized Smallworld applications.
- Conduct code reviews and ensure development follows established technical standards.
- Maintain technical documentation for custom code, configurations, and application dependencies.
- Support knowledge transfer and mentoring related to Magik development and Smallworld customization.
Smallworld Internet Application Server
- Administer and configure the Smallworld Internet Application Server.
- Support SIAS-based applications, including SLIM and other browser-accessible GIS services.
- Configure application services, user access, connections, and environment settings.
- Monitor SIAS performance, availability, security, and system dependencies.
- Troubleshoot service failures, connectivity issues, and application errors.
- Support deployments, releases, upgrades, and configuration changes.
- Maintain operational documentation and recovery procedures for SIAS environments.
ArcGIS Enterprise Development
- Design, develop, configure, and support applications within the ArcGIS Enterprise platform.
- Develop secure and scalable web-based GIS solutions using Esri development technologies.
- Publish and maintain feature services, map services, geoprocessing services, and related enterprise GIS content.
- Support Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Data Store, and associated enterprise components.
- Develop and maintain Python and ArcPy scripts for automation, analysis, data processing, and system administration.
- Use the ArcGIS REST API to support application functionality and system integration.
- Troubleshoot application, service, authentication, performance, and data access issues.
- Support ArcGIS Enterprise upgrades, patches, deployments, and environment modernization.
ArcGIS Experience Builder Development
- Design and develop custom web applications using ArcGIS Experience Builder Developer Edition.
- Create custom widgets, themes, data actions, layouts, and application components using code.
- Configure complex application workflows that extend beyond out-of-the-box Experience Builder capabilities.
- Develop applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, React, ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, and related web technologies.
- Integrate Experience Builder applications with ArcGIS Enterprise services and external systems.
- Optimize application performance, usability, accessibility, and maintainability.
- Troubleshoot custom widgets, APIs, state management, authentication, and deployment issues.
- Maintain development standards, source code documentation, and reusable application components.
Dam Safety Information System
- Lead the technical configuration, development, and enhancement of the Dam Safety Information System.
- Develop custom DSIS functionality using ArcGIS Experience Builder Developer Edition and related Esri technologies.
- Support spatial analysis, data management, visualization, reporting, and operational workflows related to dam safety.
- Collaborate with business, engineering, and operational stakeholders to gather and validate system requirements.
- Translate dam safety requirements into scalable technical designs.
- Support testing, implementation, production deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
- Maintain DSIS technical documentation, configurations, data models, and support procedures.
System Integration & Data Synchronization
- Design and implement integrations between GE Smallworld and ArcGIS Enterprise platforms.
- Develop data synchronization processes supporting reliable information exchange between legacy and modern GIS systems.
- Design service-based architectures, APIs, interfaces, and spatial data transformation workflows.
- Integrate geospatial platforms with utility, engineering, operational, and enterprise business systems.
- Develop RESTful services and supporting integration components.
- Define data mappings, validation rules, error-handling procedures, and reconciliation methods.
- Monitor integration performance and resolve synchronization, connectivity, or data consistency issues.
- Document integration architecture, dependencies, security requirements, and operational procedures.
Enterprise Architecture & Modernization
- Evaluate existing geospatial platforms, applications, data models, integrations, and operational dependencies.
- Develop technical recommendations that balance production stability with modernization objectives.
- Contribute to long-term technology roadmaps for sustaining and replacing legacy geospatial systems.
- Define migration strategies from Smallworld applications to ArcGIS Enterprise and other contemporary platforms.
- Assess technical risks, implementation dependencies, business impacts, and system readiness.
- Develop architecture diagrams, technical standards, solution designs, and transition plans.
- Recommend technologies and deployment models based on performance, scalability, security, maintainability, and cost.
- Support proof-of-concept efforts and phased modernization initiatives.
Utility Network Modeling & Data Management
- Support complex geospatial data models for electric, gas, water, and other utility environments.
- Maintain utility network connectivity, topology, attribution, and spatial relationships.
- Analyze and resolve data integrity, network modeling, and operational workflow issues.
- Develop data quality, validation, cleansing, and reconciliation procedures.
- Support network tracing, asset modeling, engineering workflows, and operational reporting.
- Collaborate with utility subject matter experts to ensure geospatial models reflect real-world business processes.
- Maintain data models and technical documentation across legacy and modern platforms.
Cloud & Infrastructure Support
- Support GIS solutions hosted within Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, on-premises, or hybrid environments.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and cloud teams to design scalable and secure deployment architectures.
- Assist with environment provisioning, access management, monitoring, backups, recovery, and capacity planning.
- Support cloud-based application services, storage, networking, and identity integrations.
- Evaluate opportunities to modernize GIS systems through cloud services and automation.
- Ensure solutions align with enterprise security, availability, and disaster recovery standards.
DevOps, Version Control & Release Management
- Manage source code repositories using Git, Azure DevOps, GitHub, SVN, or similar tools.
- Develop and maintain branching strategies, release processes, deployment standards, and rollback procedures.
- Coordinate deployments across development, testing, quality assurance, and production environments.
- Support continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines for GIS applications.
- Maintain release notes, technical documentation, workplace configurations, and deployment records.
- Ensure changes are appropriately reviewed, tested, approved, and implemented.
- Partner with project and technical teams to align with software development lifecycle and change management practices.
- Identify opportunities to automate builds, testing, deployment, monitoring, and validation activities.
Requirements Analysis & Solution Design
- Facilitate discovery sessions with business, engineering, operations, and technology stakeholders.
- Gather, analyze, validate, and document functional and technical requirements.
- Translate utility business requirements into scalable geospatial solutions.
- Develop technical specifications, process flows, architecture diagrams, data mappings, and implementation plans.
- Evaluate technical feasibility, business impact, performance, security, and maintainability.

Technical Support & Incident Resolution
- Provide advanced technical support for production geospatial applications and platforms.
- Troubleshoot complex issues spanning applications, services, integrations, databases, infrastructure, and network dependencies.
- Perform root-cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Support high-priority incidents affecting utility business operations.
- Communicate issue status, impact, risks, and resolution plans to stakeholders.
- Maintain support documentation, known-error records, and technical runbooks.
- Participate in after-hours support when required for critical production issues or deployments.
Technical Leadership & Consulting
- Serve as a senior technical advisor to customers, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
- Lead technical design reviews, architecture discussions, troubleshooting sessions, and solution demonstrations.
- Provide guidance on GE Smallworld, Magik, ArcGIS Enterprise, Experience Builder, integration, and modernization practices.
- Identify technical risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Review technical deliverables for quality, completeness, performance, and compliance.
- Mentor developers, analysts, consultants, and customer technical resources.
- Support estimates, proposals, Statements of Work, and technical sales activities as assigned.
- Build trusted relationships with utility operations, engineering, business, and technology stakeholders.
Documentation, Training & Knowledge Sharing
- Create and maintain system architecture documentation, application designs, data models, interface specifications, and support procedures.
- Develop technical standards for Smallworld, Magik, ArcGIS, web development, integration, and release management.
- Prepare configuration guides, deployment instructions, user guides, and technical runbooks.
- Conduct knowledge transfer sessions and technical training.
- Develop reusable technical assets, templates, code libraries, and implementation guidance.
- Document lessons learned and recommend improvements for future engagements.
- Promote knowledge sharing and technical consistency across teams.
Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement
- Complete assigned deliverables accurately, on time, and within established project expectations.
- Communicate project progress, technical risks, dependencies, and issues to project leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of GE Smallworld Core Spatial Technology.
- Strong experience supporting Smallworld Transmission and Distribution applications, including DAD, SAM, and PowerGrid.
- Advanced proficiency in Magik programming, debugging, customization, and application development.
- Experience administering and configuring the Smallworld Internet Application Server.
- Experience supporting SLIM or similar SIAS-based applications.
- Advanced knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise, including Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Data Store.
- Strong hands-on development experience with ArcGIS Experience Builder Developer Edition.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field required.
- Master’s degree in a related discipline preferred.
- Eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressive, hands-on experience supporting enterprise geospatial systems within electric, gas, water, or other utility environments.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience with GE Smallworld Core Spatial Technology and related Transmission and Distribution applications.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining custom Magik applications required.
- Practical experience administering and configuring the Smallworld Internet Application Server required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience with ArcGIS Enterprise and its development ecosystem.
- Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on development experience with ArcGIS Experience Builder Developer Edition.
- Demonstrated experience developing custom widgets and coded Experience Builder solutions required.
- Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, ArcGIS REST API, Python, and ArcPy required.
- Proven experience integrating GE Smallworld with ArcGIS Enterprise or similar systems required.
- GE Smallworld implementation experience within utility Transmission and Distribution environments strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting mission-critical production systems required.
- Experience within consulting, engineering, utility, or Professional Services environments preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education, certifications, training, and relevant experience may be considered.

Work Environment
This position primarily operates in a professional office, remote, hybrid, or customer-site environment and routinely uses computers, enterprise GIS platforms, development tools, databases, cloud technologies, and virtual collaboration systems.
The role requires frequent collaboration with customer stakeholders, utility operations teams, engineering teams, developers, architects, project managers, infrastructure teams, and technology leadership. Work outside standard business hours may occasionally be required to support production incidents, deployments, system maintenance, or customer deadlines.
Occasional local or domestic travel may be required based on customer and project needs.
