Position Summary The Shop Team Lead is responsible for coordinating daily shop operations, supporting technicians, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently, and maintaining high standards of quality and productivity. This role serves as the primary point of contact for shop technicians and provides technical leadership while working alongside the team.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Support
- Provide daily direction and support to shop technicians.
- Assist with assigning and prioritizing work in coordination with the Service Manager and dispatch.
- Serve as the first point of contact for technical questions and troubleshooting.
- Promote a positive, professional, and safety-focused work environment.
- Assist with onboarding and mentoring new technicians.
Shop Operations
- Monitor workflow and ensure repair jobs progress efficiently.
- Coordinate movement of equipment within the shop.
- Review technician work for quality and completeness.
- Ensure work orders are updated accurately and promptly.
- Communicate job status, delays, and required parts to the Service Manager.
- Monitor technician productivity and workload balancing.
- Identify work order bottlenecks and implement corrective actions.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct daily shop safety observations.
- Ensure technicians use proper PPE and safe work practices.
- Maintain a clean and organized shop environment.
Customer & Service Support
- Assist in diagnosing complex repairs.
- Support technicians in identifying required parts and repair solutions.
- Help ensure estimates and repair recommendations are accurate.
- Participate in customer discussions when technical expertise is required.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor productivity and efficiency within the shop.
- Recommend process improvements and best practices.
- Assist the Service Manager with identifying training needs.
- Provide ongoing coaching, skills development, and performance feedback to technicians while identifying training opportunities.
- Support achievement of departmental KPIs.
Qualifications
- Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician, Forklift Technician, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of technical experience in material handling, heavy equipment, or related industry.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and strong communication skills.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.
- Experience with work order systems and service documentation.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced workplace.
- Bilingual French and English communication skills are required for this position. The duties of this role involve frequent oral and written communications with employees, customers, and business partners across Canada, including individuals who conduct business in English. Knowledge of English is therefore necessary to perform the responsibilities of the position and to maintain effective communications with these stakeholders.
