Position: Visual Language Interpreter-Itinerant - Continuing Hours: 27.00 Monday-Friday - 10 Months Salary: $32.95 Per Hour Reporting to the Principal or designate, the Visual Language Interpreter (VLI) works as part of a cooperative team within the District and provides interpreting and support services for deaf and hard of hearing students, consistent with the Ministry of Education guidelines. The VLI receives direction from a District Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with regard to implementation of the students' Individual Education Plan goals, and the Classroom Teacher with regard to implementation of the regular curriculum.
Provides American Sign
Language # Prepares as necessary for interpreting by previewing material, vocabulary, and concepts. Provides interpreting services for school functions including classroom instruction, activities, assemblies, counselling sessions, parent-student meetings, field trips, tutorials,
and other situations throughout the school day as required. # Provide direct supervision and guidance to students during classroom activities, ensuring their engagement and understanding of visual language materials and instruction. # Completion of a two (2) year post secondary program in Visual Language Interpretation including certification from a professional association such as the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC).
American Sign Language
Level 8 proficiency. A valid class 5 driver's licence is required. Knowledge of Visual Language Interpretation and the ability to work effectively with deaf and hard of hearing students in an educational setting.
Ability to acquire child-specific program knowledge and skills which may be required for behavior management, equipment handling and communications alternatives such as sign language and augmentative communication. Knowledge and ability to use computer programs and to adapt the programs to the student's need and level. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral English.
Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating clear and effective interactions between deaf and hearing individuals through nuanced visual language interpretation. Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language including the ability to adjust to the signing, educational and communication levels required. Familiarity with relevant technology and interpreting equipment, including video relay services or remote interpreting platforms, as applicable.
