The Shift Lead at GE Booth WRRF is second in command to the Shift Coordinator and supports daily plant operations, operational direction, staff coordination and communication. The role is the primary shift operational contact for operators, maintenance, contractor and chemical receiving.
The primary technical focus is the solids stream: solids removal, blending, thickening, dewatering. The core technical focus is operation and monitoring of the four (4) plant incinerators, this includes maintaining maximum safe, stable and sustainable incineration. The role also requires sufficient conventional-treatment knowledge to understand upstream conditions and their effect on solids production and downstream capacity.
When the Shift Coordinator is unavailable, the Shift Lead may take on daily operational updates, plant operations and directions, staff coordination and management updates within the established authority of the role.
Mandatory
- Minimum Class 1 Wastewater Treatment License as per Reg.129/04 Licensing of Sewage Works Operators made under the Ontario Water Resources Act and have the ability to achieve certification to the highest level of the facility.
- Valid Class G Drivers license.
- Ability to work on a rotating shift schedule or compressed work week.
- Must be able to respond to on-call within a reasonable period of time and work as ORO (Overall Responsible Operator).
Knowledge
- Excellent knowledge and experience in the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of advanced wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater collection systems.
- Scheduled readings and recordings; monitoring local process conditions and equipment operations.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions including storage of chemicals, confined space entry, equipment lockout/tagging and personal protective equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with safe, stable, sustainable operation of incinerators from start up to shut down, utilizing the current conditions across the plant.
- Knowledge and operational experience of solids handling,
dewatering and thickening including centrifuges and all subsequent chemical delivery and feed systems for production.
- Excellent knowledge of computerized monitoring systems such as SCADA,
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and chemistry including chemical dosing and process optimization in order to make calculations regarding chemicals and operating processes.
- Knowledge of wastewater facilities operating methods, procedures and techniques and their practical application.
- Technical and electrical/mechanical knowledge.
- Robust plant systemic knowledge to quickly and succinctly troubleshoot without impeding production or incineration
- Preferred Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) knowledge and overall computer literacy to record data from inspections and monitoring activities to complete work orders, project forms to initiate repairs for maintenance.

- Judgement and decision making skills to provide direction to staff on projects, work and priorities.
- Interpersonal skills to provide direction, advice and recommendations to management, contractors, equipment suppliers, project staff and other Agency personnel.
- Problem solving and analytical skills to troubleshoot and make timely decisions to address work priorities and emergencies.
- Ability to correct operating discrepancies; to trace abnormal conditions or noise; to report major deviations or conditions that do not respond to normal corrective actions; and to determine from several choices the method to restore normal operating conditions.
- Good oral communication skills to report equipment problems or malfunctions in order to ensure the problem is conveyed and understood, and to provide direction for corrective response.
- Good written communication skills to write reports.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints engineering drawings and follow process drawings to aid in troubleshooting equipment problems.
- Ability to use and understand operating and maintenance manuals, and other technical specifications.
- Physical dexterity to perform job duties in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and in dirty and/or noisy environments.
- Ability to plan and schedule operational tasks for the department under the guidance of the manager.

OCWA’s Operator Career Path Program:
The Operator Career Path Program provides learning, continuing education, career development and certification advancement opportunities. As you develop and obtain higher level licenses, you will progress through the Operator Career Path with increased operational responsibilities as well as training and mentoring opportunities. When you successfully obtain a higher certification/license, you will be eligible for additional base or premium pay in accordance with the schedule below.
OCWA offers internal career progression for Operators through the Operator Career Path to encourage them to pursue higher‑level licences. The salary ranges below will be applied based on the certification you hold at the time of hire and will be progressed internally upon obtaining higher‑level certification/license:
- $24.88 to $26.41 per hour (OIT)
- $27.92 to $31.06 per hour (Level 1 Operator)
- $29.49 to $32.83 per hour (Level 2 Operator)
- $30.67 to $38.04 per hour (Level 3 or 4 Operator)
