Head Custodian & Facilities Lead
Full-Time, Year-Round Position | Connect Charter School
Connect Charter School is seeking a full-time Head Custodian & Facilities Lead to join our school facilities team.
This is a hands-on working position. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their day actively cleaning and maintaining the school while also providing leadership and direction to the facilities team. We are looking for someone who takes pride in exceptional work, notices what needs to be done, and leads by example by demonstrating strong, efficient, industry-standard cleaning practices for a school environment.
Approximately 85% of this position is hands-on custodial and cleaning work. Leadership responsibilities are embedded within the role and include coordinating the work of the facilities team, training and supporting staff, monitoring cleaning standards, organizing preventative maintenance, and helping ensure that the school is safe, clean, secure, and well maintained.
The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated and highly organized, with strong attention to detail and a willingness to work alongside others. They should be comfortable providing clear direction and constructive feedback while contributing directly to the work that needs to be completed each day.
This is a year-round position offering competitive compensation and health and dental benefits. Shifts may vary depending on school days, professional development days and operational needs. Generally, regular hours will be 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Key ResponsibilitiesHands-On Cleaning and Custodial Work
- Perform daily light and heavy-duty cleaning throughout the school, including classrooms, washrooms, offices, hallways, common spaces and other areas.
- Sweep, wet mop, damp mop, scrub and maintain floors, including periodic stripping, sealing and refinishing.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, high-touch surfaces and other areas according to appropriate standards for school environments.
- Remove garbage, recycling and other waste materials.
- Operate custodial equipment safely and effectively.
- Complete seasonal and periodic deep-cleaning projects.
- Assist with snow removal, exterior upkeep and other building and grounds responsibilities as required.
- Maintain consistently high standards of cleanliness throughout the school and take initiative when additional work is required.
- Model efficient, thorough and professional cleaning practices for other members of the facilities team.
- Some heavy lifting (moving furniture such as student desks).
Team Leadership and Organization
- Work alongside facilities staff while providing day-to-day leadership, direction and support.
- Coordinate cleaning assignments and schedules to ensure all areas of the school are consistently maintained.
- Train new staff and support ongoing development of existing facilities staff.
- Establish clear expectations for cleaning quality and provide respectful, constructive feedback when standards are not being met.
- Monitor work to ensure cleaning is thorough, efficient and completed according to established expectations.
- Assist with ensuring appropriate staffing and coverage for operational needs.
- Foster a respectful, collaborative and accountable facilities team.
Building, Grounds and Preventative Maintenance
- Identify maintenance needs and coordinate planned and unexpected maintenance of the school building, grounds and equipment.
- Complete minor repairs and maintenance within the scope of the position.
- Help coordinate the upkeep of school grounds, playing fields, gardens, pathways and exterior areas, including snow clearing as required.
- Monitor building systems and promptly identify concerns requiring specialized maintenance.
- In consultation with school administration, determine whether maintenance can be completed internally or requires Calgary Board of Education personnel or an external contractor.
- Coordinate access for contractors and inspectors and monitor work completed on site.
- Support preventative maintenance schedules and required facility safety checks.
- Develop familiarity with school mechanical and building systems and support their protected and efficient operation.
Safety, Supplies and Facility Operations
- Maintain a strong focus on occupational health and safety and identify potential hazards to students, staff and visitors.
- Complies with provincial Occupational Health and Safety requirements and regulations.
- Promptly communicate safety concerns to school administration and assist in developing appropriate responses.
- Ensure cleaning products and potentially hazardous materials are appropriately labelled, stored and handled.
- Ensure facilities staff complete required training and certifications associated with their duties.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of custodial supplies, equipment and tools.
- Order supplies, check invoices and assist with monitoring facilities-related budgets and expenditures.
- Maintain required records, reports and maintenance documentation.
- Support school security procedures and respond to emergency call-outs from police or the Calgary Board of Education alarm company during closure periods when required.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding information acquired through the course of employment.
- Perform other related duties as required to support the safe, clean and effective operation of the school.
Previous custodial experience in a school, institutional, commercial or similarly high-use environment would be considered an asset. Previous experience providing leadership or direction to a custodial or facilities team would also be an asset.
Terms and Application
The successful candidate will begin with a three-month probationary contract. Following a successful evaluation, there may be an opportunity for a longer-term contract.

Pay: $25.75-$29.10 per hour
