Wells Engineer
- Location: Remote (Canada), with regular travel to field operations in Eastern Canada.
- Contract Type: Full-time employee
About the Company
We are an early-stage technology startup that has raised several million dollars in seed funding to develop and field-test a technology that requires accessing energy through wellbores. We have completed our first pilot experiment and are building an operations team that will advance the program through its next phases.
Our name and the location of our field program are confidential at this stage. Canada is a new market for the company and our expansion there has not yet been announced publicly. Candidates who advance in the process will receive full details on the company, the technology, and the site.
About the Role
We are hiring a Wells Engineer to own the downhole side of our pilot program: wellbore design, completions, well intervention, and well testing. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer and work day to day alongside our Operations Superintendent, who runs the field site, and a Facility Engineer who owns the surface equipment. Your job is everything from the wellhead down.
This is an exploration-style environment with limited offset data and a thin local service market. You will be designing programs from first principles, sourcing contractors and tools that were not necessarily built for our application, and adapting quickly when the subsurface does not behave as modeled. You need to be comfortable being the only wells engineer in the room.
Your Responsibilities
- Design and execute well programs from site selection with the exploration team, through drilling, completion, and abandonment: including designing casing, cement, drilling fluids, BHA, and directional plans.
- Design and supervise completions, workovers, and well interventions (wireline, slickline, coiled tubing, pumping, and perforating services) in unconventional rock types.
- Own well integrity: pressure testing, barrier verification, corrosion and materials considerations, and the well integrity records for each well.
- Prepare drilling, completion, and intervention procedures, risk assessments, and well control plans, and lead pre-spud and pre-job reviews with contractors.
- Supervise wellsite operations directly during critical phases.
- Run the procurement cycle for wells services and downhole equipment: scope of work, competitive bidding, contractor qualification, and MSA compliance.
- Manage cost and schedule for each well program, including AFEs, daily cost tracking, and change management.
- Contribute to the company's long-term well and field development strategy as the program scales from pilot to multi-well operations.
- Support permit applications and regulatory submissions with well designs, technical narratives, and responses to regulator questions.
As an early hire in a rapidly scaling startup, your role will evolve and your responsibility will grow with the company.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in petroleum, mechanical, or chemical engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of wells experience in oil and gas or geothermal, with substantial hands-on time in completions, workovers, and well intervention, not drilling alone.
- Experience setting up operations in a new basin or region with limited infrastructure and few established service providers.
- Experience writing procedures, risk assessments, and well programs that contractors can execute from.
- Willingness to travel to the field site in Canada for extended periods during operations, and to be present at the wellsite for critical phases.
- Experience with regulatory permitting for wells (drilling permits and injection permits).
- Legal ability to work in Canada.
Nice to Have
- Experience with pilot-scale or R&D; field programs where the technology itself is being tested.
- Working French fluency
What We Offer
- Full-time employment with competitive compensation and a flexible, remote-first working arrangement.
- Meaningful equity participation, commensurate with profile and experience.
- A senior technical seat in a small team where your decisions shape the program directly.
We value diversity and believe that a mix of perspectives makes for better engineering. Applicants from all backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Pay: $125,000.00-$155,000.00 per year
Advantages:
- Paid time off
- Work from home
Application question(s):
- Very briefly, describe a well that you worked on that involved fancy jewelry? When and where?
- What was the last TD you drilled, what was the mud weight at TD, and what was the pore pressure and frac gradient window you were working in? When was this?
Experience:
- Drilling Engineering: 5 years (required)
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Canada
