Canada

Company Overview

Vantage Commodities is a wholesale lumber trading company operating across Canada and the US. We run a lean, technology-focused operation supported by an internally developed ERP platform that connects our trading, inventory, and financial processes. As we grow, our focus is on improving processes, leveraging technology and automating repetitive work rather than simply adding headcount.

The Role

The Staff Accountant / Junior Controller will work closely with the Controller across our Canadian and US entities, taking ownership of core accounting processes while gaining exposure to cross-border accounting, sales tax, credit and financial reporting.

We're looking for someone with strong accounting fundamentals who is analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable using technology to improve how work gets done.

Key Responsibilities

- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable across both entities
- Maintain accurate financial records and bookkeeping in Xero
- Support month-end close, including journal entries and account reconciliations
- Prepare US state sales tax filings following training and under the Controller's oversight
- Support customer credit applications and maintain vendor/customer tax documentation
- Investigate and resolve accounting and transaction discrepancies
- Respond to ad hoc financial analysis and reporting requests
- Help improve and automate recurring finance processes
- Learn and effectively use Vantage's internally developed ERP platform

Qualifications

- Degree, diploma or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or a related field
- Approximately 1–3 years of relevant accounting or finance experience,

including meaningful co-op or internship experience
- Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals, including AP, AR, journal entries and reconciliations
- Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups and pivot tables
- Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail with the ability to independently own recurring processes and deadlines
- Comfortable learning new systems and working with financial data
- Proactive mindset with an interest in improving processes and reducing manual work
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across finance, trading and operations
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Preferred (Not Required)

Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

- Multi-entity or cross-border Canada–US accounting
- Xero or other cloud-based accounting systems
- US sales tax and/or Canadian GST/HST
- Inventory, wholesale, distribution, commodities or trading environments
- ERP systems and finance process automation
- Advanced Excel, including Power Query
- SQL, Power BI or other data/reporting tools
- Credit management or customer credit processes
- Progress toward, or interest in pursuing, a CPA designation
- Lumber, forestry, logistics or physical commodity trading

What Success Looks Like

You'll become a trusted owner of key finance processes, maintain accurate financial records, and develop a strong understanding of how transactions flow through Vantage. As you grow in the role, you'll take on increasing responsibility and help make our finance operation more efficient, automated and scalable.

Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
