About BACKLAND

BACKLAND Expedition Gear designs and manufactures premium accessories for Sprinter vans and the overlanding market, serving customers across Canada and the United States. We're looking for an experienced bookkeeper to take full ownership of our accounting, payroll, and day-to-day HR and business administration.

This is a trusted role for someone who is accurate, organized, confidential, and comfortable working independently in a fast-moving, product-based business.

Our Systems

We use Xero for accounting, Katana for ERP and Shopify for sales, and we're planning a future move to Odoo. Experience with any of these is a strong asset.

What You'll Do

Bookkeeping and Payroll

- Manage full-cycle bookkeeping on an accrual basis in Xero, including approximately 100 vendor invoices per month
- Process accounts payable and receivable, including multi-currency transactions
- Reconcile bank, credit card, and Shopify payments
- Identify missing information, coding errors, duplicate payments, or unusual transactions
- Reconcile inventory and cost of goods sold with our operations team
- Prepare GST and provincial sales tax filings
- Manage import accounting and customs payments
- Run biweekly payroll, including timesheet approval, remittances, and year-end reporting
- Support our future transition to Odoo, including setup and data migration on the accounting side

Month-End, Reporting, and Year-End

- Prepare a monthly profit and loss statement and balance sheet
- Build and maintain month-end processes and checklists to keep records accurate and up to date
- Flag inconsistencies, missing information, or financial concerns
- Prepare year-end records and respond to requests from our external accountant

HR Administration

- Coordinate onboarding and offboarding, including contracts, new-hire paperwork, final pay, and Records of Employment
- Maintain confidential employee files and track vacation, sick time, and other leaves
- Administer employee benefits enrolments and changes
- Ensure pay, overtime, holidays, and policies comply with Alberta Employment Standards
- Act as the first point of contact for employee payroll, benefits, and HR questions

What You Bring

Required

- 3+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping experience (5+ preferred)
- Strong Xero skills
- Canadian payroll experience with Wagepoint or a similar system
- Experience with GST and provincial sales tax filings
- Strong accounts payable and reconciliation experience
- Experience with CAD/USD transactions
- Experience preparing year-end information for an external accountant
- Familiarity with Alberta Employment Standards
- Strong spreadsheet and digital organization skills
- Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and communication
- A high level of confidentiality and trustworthiness

Assets

- Experience in a product-based, manufacturing, automotive, e-commerce, or inventory-based business
- Experience with Shopify payment reconciliation and/or Odoo
- CBSA CARM and import accounting experience
- Experience supporting a software or system transition

- Experience improving accounting and admin processes and documentation
- Xero certification or PCP designation

The Right Fit You're highly organized, accurate, and proactive. You don't wait for problems to become emergencies. You're comfortable asking questions, tracking down missing information, and keeping records clean and current.

You take ownership of deadlines, protect confidentiality, and understand the importance of clean books, accurate payroll, timely payments, and organized records.

What Success Looks Like

Within 30 days, payroll is reliable, bills are being processed, reconciliations are current, and key accounting, HR, and admin deadlines are understood.

Within 90 days, month-end reporting is consistent, processes are documented, records are organized, and the accounting and admin function runs with minimal owner involvement.
