Position Overview The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership for a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe, affordable, high-quality housing and supportive services for seniors and retirees.
The CEO is responsible for ensuring the effective management and long-term sustainability of the organization while maintaining a strong resident-focused culture. The role combines executive leadership, property and housing operations, financial management, regulatory compliance, staff leadership, community relations, and organizational development.
The CEO works closely with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the organization’s strategic direction and ensure that its operations reflect the needs, dignity, independence, safety, and well-being of senior residents.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan, vision, mission, and long-term objectives.
- Provide executive leadership for the organization’s retirement and seniors housing operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve resident services, housing programs, operational efficiency, and organizational sustainability.
- Advise the Board of Directors on strategic priorities, risks, opportunities, and emerging trends affecting seniors housing.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, community organizations, healthcare and social-service partners, and other stakeholders.
Resident Experience & Seniors Services
- Promote a resident-centred approach in all areas of operations.
- Ensure residents receive safe, respectful, responsive, and high-quality housing and support services.
- Establish policies and practices that promote dignity, independence, privacy, accessibility, and quality of life for seniors.
- Respond effectively to resident concerns, complaints, emergencies, and complex situations.
- Support initiatives that promote social connection, community engagement, wellness, and active aging among residents.
Operations & Property Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of retirement residences, seniors housing communities, and related properties.
- Ensure buildings, common areas, resident units, and outdoor spaces are properly maintained, safe, accessible, and compliant with applicable standards.
- Oversee preventative maintenance, capital planning, building improvements, renovations, and major projects.
- Ensure effective property management, occupancy management, resident relations, and service delivery.
- Establish operational policies and procedures that support efficient and consistent service across the organization.
Financial Management
- Provide overall leadership of the organization’s financial operations and long-term financial sustainability.
- Develop and oversee annual operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor financial performance, cash flow, revenues, expenses, and operating results.
- Ensure responsible stewardship of public, charitable, rental, and other organizational funds.
- Work with the Board and financial advisors/auditors to maintain appropriate financial controls and reporting.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency while protecting the quality of resident services.
Human Resources & Leadership
- Recruit, lead, develop, and retain a qualified and compassionate management team and workforce.
- Establish a positive workplace culture based on professionalism, accountability, respect, inclusion, and service to seniors.
- Oversee performance management, professional development, succession planning, and leadership development.
- Ensure compliance with employment standards, workplace safety requirements, and organizational HR policies.
- Promote effective communication and collaboration between management, employees, residents, families, volunteers, and the Board.
Regulatory Compliance, Risk & Safety
- Ensure compliance with applicable provincial and municipal legislation, housing requirements, health and safety standards, employment legislation, privacy requirements, accessibility standards, and other regulatory obligations.
- Maintain effective risk-management, emergency preparedness, incident-response, and business-continuity programs.
- Ensure appropriate policies are in place to protect residents, employees, organizational assets, and the organization’s reputation.
- Work with legal, regulatory, insurance, healthcare, and other professional advisors as required.
Board Governance & Reporting
- Serve as the primary link between management and the Board of Directors.
- Prepare regular reports for the Board regarding operations, finances, resident services, capital projects, risks, and strategic initiatives.
- Support effective Board governance and provide accurate and timely information for decision-making.
- Implement Board-approved policies, strategies, and resolutions.
- Maintain transparency, accountability, and strong governance practices.
Community & Stakeholder Relations
- Represent the organization within the seniors housing, non-profit, community, and broader public sectors.
- Develop relationships with municipal, provincial, and federal stakeholders, funding organizations, community partners, healthcare providers,
and seniors-serving organizations.
- Promote the organization’s mission and contribution to the local community.
- Participate in industry associations, community events, and sector initiatives relevant to seniors housing and retirement living.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Administration, Social Services, Gerontology, Property Management, or a related field; a master’s degree is an asset.
- Significant senior leadership experience, preferably within seniors housing, retirement living, affordable housing, healthcare, social services, or the non-profit sector.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex operations, budgets, properties, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors and in a governance environment.
- Strong understanding of the needs and expectations of seniors and older adults.
- Knowledge of Canadian seniors housing, retirement living, affordable housing, or community-based services is an asset.
- Experience with financial planning, budgeting, capital projects, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong communication, negotiation, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change and continuous improvement.

Position Purpose The overall purpose of the Chief Executive Officer is to ensure that the organization remains financially sustainable, operationally effective, and strongly focused on the people it serves — providing seniors with safe, affordable, respectful, and well-managed homes where they can maintain dignity, independence, and a strong sense of community. Pay: $59.53-$65.12 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 45.0 per week
