Your Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Marketing & Communications, the Communications Specialist will spread brand awareness and enhance Conservation Halton’s image while maintaining clear, accurate and engaging content both internally and externally. As a dynamic, motivated and responsive team player, they will serve as a storyteller, content manager and communications advisor, leveraging opportunities and relationships to support organizational objectives. Responsible and accountable for communications products relating to watershed management files, they will translate complex scientific and technical information into plain language and deliver strategic communications across a variety of channels.
- Craft and execute communications plans, including media relations, public communications, internal communications and speaking notes
- Develop communication plans and provide strategic communications advice and support to business units across the organization
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and ensure brand consistency across communication products, channels and divisions
- Edit, review and develop a variety of content including news releases, reports, website content, blog posts, briefing notes, presentations, organizational emails and social media content
- Lead communications for the Halton Children’s Water Festival in collaboration with Conservation Halton and Halton Region partners
- Serve as the subject matter expert for social media platforms (Sprout & META), media monitoring (Cision) and communications analytics (Sprout & Google Analytics)
- Develop and maintain the Conservation Halton Social Media Strategy, content calendars, training materials, SOPs, best practices and policies for Conservation Halton brands
- Monitor digital engagement, analyze performance metrics and track KPIs in alignment with organizational objectives
- Lead the development and distribution of the monthly Word on the Watershed e-newsletter and weekly media monitoring reports
- Serve as a subject matter expert for content management systems and provide training and support to team members
- Build and maintain organizational websites, including Climate Hub, Source Water Protection,
Blue Gala and Halton Children’s Water Festival websites, and ensure content remains accurate, current and engaging
- Stay current on emerging communications, social media and digital engagement trends and develop digital content using a variety of tools and platforms
Your Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field (Environmental Sciences considered an asset)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a communications and/or marketing environment
- Minimum 4 years of experience working with a science-focused organization, including translating scientific and technical information into content that broad audiences can understand and engage with
- Minimum 3 years of experience leading creative ideation, strategy, writing, editing and visual content development
- Experience in project management, including developing project plans, targets and milestones
- Ability to be self-directed, self-motivated, take initiative and demonstrate strong organizational skills
- Excellent written, verbal and proofreading skills, with experience creating and editing content for digital and traditional communications using plain language principles
- Knowledge and application of communications and stakeholder engagement plans, strategies and evaluation methods
- Experience supporting enterprise-wide communications initiatives
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms, community management, SEO and audience engagement strategies
- Proficiency with digital platforms and systems including WordPress, Sprout Social, MailChimp, Cision, SurveyMonkey, Environics, Park Pass, Canva, YoDeck, MS Forms and Jot Forms
- Experience creating video content and social media reels, with a solid visual eye for imagery
- Proficiency with content management systems and mass email marketing platforms
- Demonstrated understanding of information architecture, user experience, accessibility standards (AODA) and Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)
