Position Summary
Responsible for producing precision springs by operating and programming spring-making and CNC equipment. Sets up machines for first-time orders, produces and measures first-off samples, completes inspection and work-in-process documentation, performs test runs, makes or modifies tooling, maintains machine supplies, troubleshoots equipment, and recommends process or specification changes to improve production efficiency and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Control efficient operation of spring-making and related manufacturing equipment to meet production schedules and standards.
- Program CNC equipment and select or create tooling required for first-off production.
- Produce first-off samples, measure springs, complete inspection reports, and perform a 100-piece test run for new parts.
- Make or modify tools and tooling components including coiling points, cutters, pitch tools, arbors, feed rolls, and wire guides.
- Maintain and order required machine parts and tools to ensure uninterrupted production.
- Ensure department output complies with Quality Assurance standards and participates in the company’s continual improvement program.
- Follow production schedule and ensure correct quantities and part numbers are manufactured.
- Participate in Health and Safety, Housekeeping, and Environmental programs related to the spring-making equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance and follow maintenance logs to keep equipment in reliable condition.
- Second shift Spring Maker has authority to stop production for quality or equipment problems.
Core Duties
- Obtain scheduled work orders and prepare sample boxes with product samples and specific tooling.
- Select raw material, complete wire issue slips, and return wire to storage with appropriate documentation.
- Set up machines: install feed rolls, wire guides, coiling/forming tools and change gears as required.
- Choose and load the appropriate computer program for each job.
- Complete set-up, produce correct first-offs, and submit them to Quality Assurance for verification.
- Set ovens to specified stress relief temperature and time and submit WIP cards to Quality for new or revised parts.
- Identify and label containers per routing flow chart and pack springs at the coiler when possible.
- Deliver manufactured springs to final inspection using pallet truck and complete time tickets.
- When required, machine tooling in the Tool Room: select material and set up/operate lathes, mills, drills, grinders or other machining equipment.
- Perform daily cleaning and lubrication of machines; complete monthly maintenance tasks per the Maintenance Log.
Skills and Experience
- General understanding of CNC programming.
- Spring-making experience and familiarity with spring-coiling equipment is an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
- Basic machining and tool-making skills, including using a bench grinder.
- Strong measurement skills and ability to convert between Imperial and Metric units.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 quality management concepts and practices.
Education and Qualifications
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Equivalent manufacturing experience may substitute for formal education.
Physical Demands
- Regular standing, bending, and lifting.
- Ability to lift containers up to 60 pounds with assistance from other employees.
- Ability to operate pallet trucks and other material-handling equipment.
Work Conditions and Authority
- Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with machine noise, moving equipment, and controlled chemical or finishing processes.
- Second shift Spring Maker may stop production at any stage for quality or equipment concerns.
Pay: $18.00-$22.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
