The Company

Maple Leaf Metals is an Edmonton-based metal recycling company that has been in business since 1978. We purchase and process all types of metals, wire, cable, and pipe.

Our operations depend on a large fleet of heavy mobile equipment and industrial processing machinery. We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead our maintenance department and ensure our equipment is maintained safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Job Overview The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the maintenance department, including preventative maintenance, equipment repairs, breakdown response, work planning, parts management, and maintenance scheduling.

The successful candidate will lead the maintenance team, coordinate repairs with Operations, prioritize equipment issues, monitor maintenance activities, and ensure equipment is available to support production requirements.

This is a hands-on supervisory position requiring strong knowledge of heavy equipment and industrial machinery, as well as proven leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Experience in scrap metal recycling, industrial operations, or a heavy-equipment environment is considered an asset.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Department Supervision

- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team.
- Assign maintenance and repair work based on equipment priorities, production requirements, and technician availability.
- Monitor the progress of maintenance work and ensure jobs are completed properly and on schedule.
- Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and support to maintenance personnel.
- Hold maintenance personnel accountable for completing assigned work and following company procedures.
- Coordinate vacation coverage, shift requirements, and maintenance manpower as required.
- Work closely with the Operations team to establish daily and weekly maintenance priorities.

Preventative Maintenance and Equipment Reliability

- Develop, maintain, and monitor preventative maintenance schedules for all mobile equipment and industrial machinery.
- Ensure required inspections, servicing, lubrication, and preventative maintenance are completed on schedule.




- Review equipment condition and maintenance history to identify recurring problems and reliability concerns.
- Develop and implement corrective actions to reduce repeated breakdowns and unplanned downtime.
- Monitor equipment availability and identify opportunities to improve reliability and maintenance efficiency.
- Ensure maintenance work orders are properly prioritized, assigned, completed, and documented.

Breakdown and Repair Coordination

- Coordinate the response to equipment breakdowns and prioritize repairs according to safety and operational requirements.
- Work with maintenance personnel to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues efficiently.
- Coordinate major repairs, rebuilds, and outside service requirements when necessary.
- Support the maintenance team with technical guidance and troubleshooting when required.
- Ensure repaired equipment is inspected and safe before being returned to service.
- Maintain communication with Operations regarding equipment status, expected downtime, and completion of repairs.

Parts and Inventory Management

- Ensure critical spare parts and maintenance supplies are available when required.
- Maintain appropriate minimum and maximum inventory levels for critical maintenance items.
- Review parts usage and identify recurring or excessive consumption.
- Coordinate parts ordering with suppliers and ensure required parts are available for scheduled repairs.
- Maintain organized maintenance and parts storage areas.

Maintenance Records and Reporting

- Ensure maintenance records, inspections, service reports, and equipment history are accurate and up to date.
- Monitor outstanding maintenance issues and ensure follow-up is completed.
- Track equipment downtime and identify trends that require corrective action.
- Prepare maintenance reports and provide updates to management regarding equipment condition, repairs, downtime, and upcoming maintenance requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance costs, parts, outside services, and major repairs.

Safety

- Ensure all maintenance activities are completed in accordance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.




- Ensure maintenance personnel follow safe work practices and use required PPE.
- Promote a strong safety culture within the maintenance department.
- Ensure equipment with safety-related deficiencies is removed from service until the issue has been properly addressed.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions when maintenance-related issues are involved.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance work environment.

Equipment The Maintenance Supervisor will oversee maintenance activities involving equipment such as:

- Material handlers
- Wheel loaders
- Shredder
- Excavators
- Forklifts
- Yard trucks
- Mobile shears
- Industrial processing equipment
- Other heavy mobile and stationary equipment

The Candidate

- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
- Previous experience supervising or leading a maintenance team is required.
- Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification or equivalent experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
- Proven ability to diagnose equipment problems and determine appropriate repair requirements.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance issues in a fast-paced operating environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to hold team members accountable while maintaining a professional and respectful work environment.
- Ability to work effectively with Operations, suppliers, contractors, and management.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Robust commitment to workplace safety and equipment reliability.
- Welding and fabrication experience is an asset.

Work Environment This position is based in an active metal recycling and heavy-equipment operating environment. The Maintenance Supervisor will spend time both coordinating maintenance activities and working directly with the maintenance team in the field.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working around heavy machinery, industrial processing equipment, outdoor yard conditions, and changing operational priorities.
