Mortgage Underwriter — Commission-Based / Remote
Compensation: $40,000 starting income potential — $100,000+ based on performance and deal volume
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM minimum
Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote

About the Role
We are looking for a diligent, detail-oriented, and motivated Mortgage Underwriter to join our growing team.
This is a performance-based opportunity where your earning potential is directly connected to your ability to efficiently and accurately review, assess, and underwrite mortgage files. The expected starting income is approximately $40,000, with the potential to earn $100,000+ for high-performing individuals who are able to consistently handle a strong volume of quality files.
The position is primarily remote. From time to time, team members may be required to attend company meetings, training sessions, team events, or other in-person activities.
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, understands the importance of accuracy and turnaround times, and is willing to put in additional effort when deal volume requires it.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze residential mortgage applications and supporting documentation.
- Assess borrower creditworthiness, income, employment, assets, liabilities, credit history, and overall financial position.
- Analyze credit reports and identify potential risks, inconsistencies, or areas requiring additional documentation.
- Verify and assess income using appropriate documentation, including employment income, self-employment income, commissions, bonuses, overtime, rental income, and other qualifying sources where applicable.
- Review bank statements, tax documents, financial statements, pay stubs, employment letters, and other supporting documentation.
- Evaluate debt-service ratios, loan-to-value ratios, loan amounts, property values, and overall loan risk.
- Review property-related documentation, including appraisals and other valuation information where applicable.
- Identify potential fraud, misrepresentation, inconsistencies, undisclosed liabilities, or other risk factors.
- Determine whether a mortgage file meets applicable lending guidelines, investor requirements, internal policies, and underwriting standards.
- Request additional documentation or clarification when required.
- Structure files appropriately based on the borrower's financial profile and the applicable lending guidelines.
- Prepare and communicate underwriting decisions, conditions, and documentation requirements clearly and efficiently.
- Work closely with mortgage brokers, agents, processors, lenders, borrowers, and other parties involved in the transaction.
- Maintain accurate and complete underwriting notes and documentation.
- Manage multiple mortgage files simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and service standards.
- Meet established turnaround times and prioritize time-sensitive transactions.
- Monitor outstanding conditions and documentation to help move approved files toward funding.
- Stay current with changes to mortgage lending guidelines, underwriting policies, regulatory requirements, and industry practices.
- Protect confidential borrower and company information and maintain appropriate privacy and information-security practices.
- Escalate unusual, high-risk, or complex files when additional review or approval is required.
- Maintain consistent quality and accuracy while working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Required Qualifications
- Previous experience in mortgage underwriting, mortgage lending, mortgage brokering, loan processing, credit adjudication, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of mortgage qualification and underwriting principles.
- Experience reviewing credit reports and financial documentation.
- Solid understanding of debt-service calculations and mortgage qualification.
- Ability to assess borrower risk and identify inconsistencies in documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong computer and document-management skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information appropriately.
Preferred Qualifications The following would be considered an asset:
- Experience underwriting a high volume of residential mortgage files.
- Experience with conventional, insured, alternative, or private mortgage products.
- Experience working with self-employed borrowers.
- Experience with complex income structures and non-traditional documentation.
- Experience with mortgage brokerages, lenders, banks, credit unions, or private lenders.
- Familiarity with mortgage underwriting software, CRM systems, document-management systems, and lender portals.
- Knowledge of current mortgage lending practices and regulatory requirements.
- Relevant mortgage industry education, certifications, or licensing where applicable.
Work Schedule & Expectations The minimum expected schedule is: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
This is a performance-based position. While 9:00 AM–5:00 PM is the minimum expected schedule, mortgage transactions can be time-sensitive and additional hours may occasionally be required to meet deadlines, manage volume, or complete urgent files.
Individuals who are passionate about the industry, highly motivated, and willing to put in additional effort will have greater opportunities to increase their earnings through additional deal volume and performance.
Compensation
This is a commission-per-deal compensation structure.
Expected earning potential
Starting: Approximately $40,000
Experienced / High Performing: $100,000+ potential
Actual earnings will depend on factors including deal volume, quality, productivity, performance, and the individual's ability to successfully process and underwrite mortgage transactions.
There is significant earning potential for individuals who are motivated, efficient, and capable of consistently handling a high volume of quality mortgage files.

This is primarily a remote position.
