St. John's

From NL and doing shutdowns out west? Trade long turnaround shifts or deployments for far away places, salty air and a route home.

Altomaxx is hiring a CAN/CGSB-48.9712 UT Level 2 to evaluate, report and supervise ultrasonic thickness measurement on ships and floating offshore units. Base in St. John’s, working offshore Newfoundland and Labrador and abroad.

Salary: $70,000 to $85,000 base depending on certification, sea time and experience, plus field day rate, per diem and overtime when travelling. Benefits, paid vacation and funded certification.

The work

Cargo oil tanks, ballast spaces and holds on ships and floating offshore units, inspected by drone so the readings are taken without scaffold, rope access or confined space entry. Our Level 1 crews capture the data. What we need is a Level 2 to evaluate it, report it and supervise the people collecting it. That rung is the job.

About Altomaxx

Altomaxx Technologies Inc. is an inspection company. We are an ABS Recognized Service Supplier for hull gauging and remote inspection techniques, hold approvals with Lloyd’s Register and DNV, and are the only accredited certification body in the world for ISO 21384-3, the international standard for unmanned aircraft operations. We work on every producing installation offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, and on projects across five continents.

What you would do

- Evaluate and interpret ultrasonic thickness data against acceptance criteria, and report it in class format inside the ten day window
- Supervise Level 1 technicians, sign off their work and log their experience hours

- Plan gauging scopes with owners and class surveyors, and set out the measurement points
- Attend vessels wherever they are: drydock, berth, anchorage or on station
- Work to written procedures under our NDT Level 3, and help improve them
- Act as responsible supervisor for class thickness measurement

What you need

- UT Level 2, current. CAN/CGSB-48.9712 UT2
- Two years on ships. As operator, technician or inspector involved with thickness measurement of ship or offshore unit structural material. The class rules make this the supervisor requirement, so it is the one we cannot teach
- Documented experience hours. Class societies ask for evidence, not assertion
- Annual vision test, arranged and paid for by us. A failed colour test does not automatically rule you out
- Able to hold an offshore medical and survival training, both funded by us
- A passport, a valid driver licence, travel at short notice, and routine drug and alcohol screening

What puts you at the top of the pile

- Marine thickness gauging. Tankers, bulkers, FPSOs or FSOs; drydock UTM, close-up survey
- A class or survey background. ABS, Lloyd’s Register, DNV, BV or a recognized service supplier
- IRATA or SPRAT rope access
- Other NDT certifications. MT, PT, VT or eddy current

- CSA W178.2 Level 2 Welding Inspector
- No drone experience expected. We teach the aircraft

Why this one and not another UT job

- Your name on the approvals. Added to our class certificates as an authorized technician
- A path to Level 3, funded, with a Level 3 to work under and your hours signed properly
- A method almost nobody has. ABS began approving drone-delivered thickness measurement in December 2023. Very few technicians anywhere have it on a resume
- Home between trips, not a fixed rotation away from your family

How to apply Apply through Indeed with your cover letter and resume. List every certification you hold, the certifying body and the expiry date, and add a line or two on your marine or gauging experience. If you meet most of the requirements and not all of them, apply anyway and tell us what you would need.

Altomaxx welcomes applications from everyone qualified to do the work.

Pay: $70,000.00-$85,000.00 per year

Benefits

- Dental care
- Employee assistance program
- Extended health care
- Life insurance
- Mileage reimbursement
- In office parking
- Paid time off
- Vision care

Application question(s):
- Do you hold a current CAN/CGSB-48.9712 UT Level 2 certification?
- How many years of experience do you have as an operator, technician or inspector taking thickness measurements on ships or offshore units?
- Do you hold a valid passport and can you travel internationally at short notice?
- Can you obtain an offshore medical and basic survival training (funded by Altomaxx)?
