Reporting to the Deputy Clerk, the Public Affairs Officer provides leadership in the development and delivery of public education, communications, and visitor services programs that promote the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The position plays a central role in ensuring that Members, staff, the public, and visiting groups receive accurate, timely, and accessible information about the Legislature, its processes, and its activities.
The Public Affairs
Officer supports the Assembly’s public relations functions, manages sessional media coordination, oversees the production of communication materials, and contributes to the planning and hosting of special events.
Responsibilities The Public Affairs Officer’s responsibilities extend across all program areas of the Legislative Assembly and include, but are not limited to:
- Delivering public education and visitor services programs, including developing tailored tours, presentations, outreach sessions, and educational activities that promote understanding of the Legislative Assembly’s history, operations, and ongoing work.
- Supporting the Assembly’s communications and media relations functions by preparing news releases, coordinating media conferences, responding to inquiries as an official spokesperson, and producing radio, television, print,
and digital communications.
- Coordinating the production and distribution of communication and promotional materials, including brochures, newsletters, advertising, and branded products, while managing timelines, translation, design, and procurement processes.
- Maintaining and updating the Assembly’s websites and sessional information, ensuring timely posting of Hansards, bills, press releases, and other documents in four official languages, and supporting independent Commissioners with their online content.
- Managing key operational programs and contracts, including the Assembly’s audio‑visual services contract, the Fine Arts and Crafts collection, the Pages Program, and the planning and delivery of special events, receptions, and visits by dignitaries.
The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, marketing, graphic design, advertising, journalism, social sciences with a communications focus, or a related field, along with two (2) years of experience in journalism and in public and corporate relations. The ability to speak Inuktitut is required. This position is designated as Highly Sensitive; a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check are required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages.
The ability to read and write Inuktitut is considered an asset, as is the ability to communicate in French. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and experience working in a northern cross‑cultural environment are also considered assets.
Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered. Applicants who possess equivalent education and/or experience that meets the requirements outlined above are encouraged to apply.
An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies.
