Recreation Therapy Assistant - Casual
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Therapy Assistant is responsible for carrying out recreation programs to ensure that the physical, spiritual, cognitive, social and emotional needs of the residents and the goals of the facility are met. Provides recreation service in accordance with the Spirituality, Mission and Values of Columbus Residence.
The Recreation Therapy
Assistant will assist the Recreation Manager with both volunteer activities and promoting residents' family involvement at Columbus Residence.
Casual Recreation Therapy Assistants provide support to cover vacations or other absences of regular Full-Time and Part time staff, or provide additional support based on programs.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Recreation Manager
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with Recreation Manger to develop, implement and evaluate group and individual programs of physical, educational and social activities. Carries out programs of physical, educational and social activities which are commensurate with the abilities of the residents.
- Carries out indoor and outdoor recreational programs including special events. May assist some residents to and from activities.
- Notifies the Director of Care when activities are cancelled and provides reasons for the cancellation. Also notifies other departments of cancelled activities.
- Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs and demonstrates related techniques as assigned.
- Submits receipts and completes forms for petty cash.
- Cleans and stores activity equipment, and reports malfunctions to the appropriate position. Identifies and recommends required activity supplies.
- Drives the Resident Bus and takes residents on outings.
- Records pertinent information regarding residents' progress in the appropriate records. Verbally notifies the Care Coordinator or Nurse regarding significant resident information and significant changes in residents' behaviour. Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
- Is provided with direction and leadership from Recreation Coordinator and assists Recreation Coordinator to evaluate whether goals are met for each existing program.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
Grade 12, completion of recognized therapeutic recreation courses plus two years recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Diploma of Therapeutic Recreation an asset.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing
- Class 4 driver’s license and asset
- Ability to deal with others effectively
- Physical ability to carry out duties of position

- Ability to organize work
- Ability to operate related equipment
Pay: $31.64 per hour
