Description The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Medical Director and requires high-level interaction with a wide variety of stakeholders, both within the University of Calgary (i.e., CHREB, legal contracts, Alberta Precision Laboratories and clinical trial participants) and externally (i.e., corporate sponsors, clinical research organizations, study vendors and external study monitors). The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent people skills and sound judgement in dealing with complex issues and multiple and competing deadlines.
The primary purpose of this position is to engage in clinical research activities and act as a point-person in communicating with the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board, study sponsors, clinical trial participants (patients) and other related groups/departments so as to ensure effective conduct of clinical trial projects within all specific guidelines.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Studies are conducted within the guidelines set out by the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board and the study sponsor
- Proactively develop and maintain relationships with team members, study sponsor representatives, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Precision Laboratories staff, and with staff across a range of University departments (including but not limited to: the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board, the Calgary Centre for Clinical Research, and Research and Trust Accounting)
- Communicate and coordinate effectively with participants, investigators, other study coordinators, clinic staff, administrative staff, regulatory agencies, sponsor and pharmaceutical representatives as required for the conduct of clinical trials
- Develop (designing, writing, editing, printing) high quality study materials, including but not limited to, protocols, informed consent forms, letters, and posters
- Manage projects effectively, on time, and in accordance with the Respiratory Clinical Trials Centre's strategic goals
- Support in the management of standard operating procedures for trial and Respiratory Clinical Trials Centre processes
- Effectively use multi-tasking skills to juggle many projects and prioritize appropriately
- Effectively meet the continuously changing needs of the Respiratory Clinical Trials Centre
- Assess feasibility (workload, budget, patient recruitment) of potential clinical trials
- Review study protocols, consent forms,
brochures and manuals for feasibility and compliance with University of Calgary
- Perform various Pulmonary Diagnostic Testing including:
- Spirometry
- Sputum induction
- Exhaled nitric oxide
- Perform other tests required by clinical trial protocols including:
- ECGs
- Vital signs including blood pressure
- Taking medical, surgical, and medication history
- Other testing as required
Qualifications / Requirements
- Bachelors degree in health science related field or equivalent
- Three to five years of experience in a clinical research position
- Previous experience working on a "wet bench" or in a translational laboratory is advantageous
- Spirometry certification required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing with the ability to work to deadlines while managing multiple tasks
- Advanced computer skills in a Windows/Microsoft Office environment
- Results oriented approach with initiative to identify areas for improvement and potential solutions
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels
- Excellent ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Certification in GCP-ICH, TCPS-2, and understanding of and experience with N2 SOP's required
- Competence in working with CTMS OnCore
- High level of understanding of University processes, especially those related to Research and Trust, Accounts Payable/Receivable, Calgary Centre for Clinical Research (CCCR) and Human Resources
