Capital Engineering is seeking an experienced Electrical Designer / Senior Electrical Designer to provide in office support for a client facility within the petrochemical, industrial, or process manufacturing sector. This fixed-term contract assignment (6 months to 1 year with a possibility of extension) will play a key role in the design, implementation, modification, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical power, control, and communication systems.
The successful candidate will work closely with project engineers, operations personnel, maintenance teams, contractors, and EPC partners to develop and execute electrical designs that are safe, practical, code-compliant, and aligned with project objectives. This role requires a strong field presence, providing hands-on technical support throughout the project lifecycle, from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, startup, and project closeout.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and execute electrical designs for plant projects, from concept through construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Prepare and maintain electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, as-builts, and technical documentation.
- Design and specify electrical equipment including MCCs, switchgear, transformers, motors, VFDs, UPS systems, cables, lighting, grounding, heat tracing, and communication networks.
- Collaborate with project engineers, operations, maintenance, contractors, and EPC firms to ensure successful project execution.
- Perform field investigations, site walkthroughs, troubleshooting, wiring checkouts, and commissioning support.
- Review EPC design packages and provide technical feedback to ensure compliance with client requirements and industry standards.
- Support power system studies, including short-circuit, coordination,
and arc flash assessments, and incorporate findings into project designs.
- Configure and integrate smart field devices, industrial networks, PLCs, DCS, SIS, protection relays, and other control system components.
- Assist with project planning, estimating, scheduling, and constructability reviews.
- Verify the accuracy, completeness, and quality of design deliverables and construction activities.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian Electrical Code, applicable industry standards, client specifications, and safety requirements.
- Provide day-to-day plant support while actively participating in EH&S; initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Follow document control processes and maintain the lifecycle of new, revised, and obsolete electrical documentation.
What We’re Looking For
- Technical Diploma in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), CET designation is an asset.
- 5+ years of electrical design experience within petrochemical, oil and gas, chemical, mining, or heavy industrial facilities.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems and equipment including MCCs, switchgears, VFDs, motors, transformers, UPS systems and electrical distribution.
- Experience working in an operating industrial facility and supporting field execution is strongly preferred.
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation or similar design software.
- Candidates must be fluent in both written and spoken English.
- A self-starter with strong technical, interpersonal,
teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of fire alarm systems or control system wiring and hardware specification is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively with engineering, operations, maintenance, construction and contractor teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
- Comfortable working independently in a field-based environment.
