Simply Sustainable Energy Solutions Inc. (SSES) is an energy and sustainability consulting firm based in the Greater Toronto Area. We provide energy management, building performance, decarbonization and sustainability consulting services to commercial, institutional, industrial and multi-residential clients across Canada.
Our work includes energy audits, energy modelling, building condition assessments, energy and carbon reduction studies, benchmarking, incentive applications and implementation support.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Energy Analyst to join our technical team and contribute to the delivery of energy and sustainability projects for our clients.
Position Overview The Senior Energy Analyst will be responsible for conducting building energy assessments, analyzing building systems and utility data, developing energy conservation measures, completing energy modelling and preparing technical reports.
The successful candidate will work directly with senior management and clients throughout the project lifecycle, from site investigation and technical analysis through recommendations, reporting and implementation support.
As the technical team expands, there may also be opportunities to take on increased project management, technical oversight and staff mentorship responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct ASHRAE Level I, II and III energy audits for commercial, institutional, industrial and multi-residential buildings.
- Perform site investigations and evaluate HVAC, mechanical, electrical, lighting, controls and building envelope systems.
- Analyze utility consumption, interval data, equipment performance and building operating characteristics.
- Identify and evaluate energy conservation measures and greenhouse gas reduction opportunities.
- Develop technical and financial analyses, including energy savings, capital costs, simple payback and lifecycle considerations.
- Prepare and calibrate building energy models using software such as IES, eQUEST, RETScreen or similar platforms.
- Evaluate measures such as HVAC upgrades, building automation and controls, VFD applications, boiler and chiller replacements, heat pumps, lighting upgrades and other building system improvements.
- Prepare feasibility studies, business cases and technical recommendations to support client capital planning.
- Assist clients with available utility and government incentive programs and prepare supporting technical documentation.
- Support projects from feasibility assessment through procurement, implementation and verification.
- Prepare clear and technically detailed reports, presentations and client deliverables.
- Support energy benchmarking, regulatory reporting and sustainability disclosure requirements.
- Develop and improve internal calculation tools, templates and reporting processes.
- Research emerging energy efficiency, electrification and decarbonization technologies.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, consultants, utilities and other project stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in energy management, energy engineering, building systems or sustainability consulting.
- Demonstrated experience conducting or supporting ASHRAE Level II and/or Level III energy audits.
- Strong understanding of commercial building mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experience analyzing building utility consumption and identifying energy conservation measures.
- Familiarity with building energy modelling software such as IES, eQUEST, RETScreen or equivalent.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong technical writing and analytical skills.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Preferred Qualifications The following qualifications are considered assets:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration.
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
- Certified Measurement & Verification Skilled (CMVP).
- Experience with building automation systems and controls.
- Experience with measurement and verification.
- Experience preparing utility or government incentive applications.
- Experience with Excel VBA, macros or other process automation tools.
- Experience with greenhouse gas accounting, decarbonization studies or sustainability reporting.
Work Environment This position involves a combination of technical analysis, report preparation, client interaction and building site assessments. Travel to client sites may be required depending on project needs.
