Site Superintendent / Quality Control & Estimation Support – Commercial Construction

Ottawa, ON

Full-Time

Reports To: Construction Manager / Project Manager

About Haven Building Group Inc.

Haven Building Group Inc. is a growing commercial and institutional construction company based in Ottawa.

Our work is heavily focused within the condominium and property management sector, where we complete both large-scale tendered construction projects and responsive service-based work.

We regularly work alongside engineering firms, consultants, condominium corporations, and property managers on projects including:

- Building envelope restoration
- Balcony and parking garage repairs
- Structural and exterior rehabilitation
- Concrete repairs and waterproofing
- Commercial renovations and fit-ups
- Capital repair projects for condominium corporations
- Ongoing service, repair, and maintenance work

Our team works across a diverse mix of larger construction projects and fast-paced service environments, providing steady work, robust variety, and opportunities for long-term growth.

The Role

Haven Building Group is looking for a versatile Site Superintendent / Quality Control & Estimation Supportprofessional who can bridge field execution, quality control, site leadership, and pre-construction support.

This is not a traditional superintendent role where the majority of the day is spent in a site trailer.

The successful candidate must be comfortable remaining hands-on and is expected to work on the tools approximately 50–75% of the time, depending on the size, complexity, and stage of the project.

The remaining time will be focused on site supervision, quality control, coordination, documentation, material planning, client/consultant interaction, and supporting our estimating team with site knowledge and practical construction input.

We are looking for someone who understands construction from the field up — someone capable of running a site, leading trades and employees, identifying quality issues before they become problems, and stepping onto the tools whenever required to keep a project moving.

What You’ll Be Doing

Site Supervision & Project Execution

- Oversee day-to-day site operations on commercial, institutional, restoration, and condominium projects
- Coordinate Haven employees, subcontractors, suppliers, and deliveries
- Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and construction details
- Maintain project schedules, sequencing, site organization, and productivity
- Coordinate upcoming labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor requirements
- Conduct daily site planning and ensure crews understand expectations and priorities
- Identify site issues early and work with the Project Manager / Construction Manager to resolve them
- Maintain professional, organized, and safe job sites
- Represent Haven professionally with clients, property managers, engineers, consultants, residents, and other stakeholders

Hands-On Construction – Approximately 50–75% This is a working superintendent position.

Depending on the project, you will be expected to work alongside the crew and directly participate in construction activities.

This may include

- Carpentry and general construction
- Building envelope repairs
- Waterproofing and flashing
- Exterior rehabilitation
- Concrete and restoration work
- Commercial renovations
- Deficiency repairs

- Investigative openings and reinstatement
- Service and emergency repair work

The ideal candidate understands that leadership at Haven includes leading from the front and contributing directly to production when required.

Quality Control

Quality control will be a major component of this position.

Responsibilities include

- Review work against drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and project details
- Inspect work completed by Haven employees and subcontractors
- Identify deficiencies before consultant or client inspections
- Ensure deficiencies are corrected promptly and properly
- Verify critical construction details before work is concealed
- Maintain photo documentation of important project stages
- Assist with deficiency lists, inspections, and project closeout
- Help establish consistent workmanship standards across Haven projects
- Work with Site Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and subcontractors to prevent recurring quality issues
- Take ownership of delivering work that meets Haven’s standards

Estimation & Pre-Construction Support This position will also provide practical field support to our estimating team.

Responsibilities may include

- Attend site visits and tender walkthroughs
- Review drawings and scopes from a constructability perspective
- Assist with field measurements and quantity verification
- Identify access requirements, site constraints, staging considerations, and potential construction challenges
- Help determine labour requirements and realistic production rates
- Provide input regarding construction methods, sequencing, materials, and equipment
- Assist estimators with subcontractor scope reviews when required
- Provide lessons learned and actual field production information to improve future estimates

You will not be expected to function as the company’s primary estimator. The objective is to bring real-world field experience into the estimating and pre-construction process. Health & Safety

- Follow and enforce all company and project-specific health and safety requirements
- Conduct and participate in toolbox talks and site safety meetings
- Ensure workers and subcontractors follow required procedures
- Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective action
- Maintain appropriate site documentation
- Lead by example in all aspects of job site safety and conduct

Communication & Documentation

- Provide regular updates to the Project Manager / Construction Manager
- Maintain daily site logs, progress photos, and basic project documentation
- Communicate upcoming labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor requirements
- Report delays, deficiencies, changes, and unforeseen site conditions promptly
- Assist with documenting extra work and changes in scope
- Maintain professional communication with clients, consultants, engineers, property managers, and occupants

- An experienced Working Foreman ready to move into a broader Site Superintendent position
- A Site Superintendent who still enjoys working on the tools
- A senior carpenter or restoration professional with strong leadership abilities
- Someone with excellent construction knowledge who naturally notices deficiencies and workmanship issues
- A field professional interested in becoming more involved with estimating and pre-construction
- Someone who enjoys variety rather than managing one type of project every day
- A self-starter who can independently assess a situation, make decisions, and keep work moving
- Someone who takes ownership of their projects rather than waiting to be told what to do

Qualifications
- 7+ years of construction experience preferred
- Previous experience as a Site Superintendent, Working Foreman, Lead Hand, or similar leadership position
- Strong hands-on carpentry and general construction abilities
- Ability and willingness to remain on the tools approximately 50–75% of the time

- Excellent attention to detail and quality
- Strong understanding of construction health and safety requirements
- Comfortable working independently and making field decisions
- Professional and confident in client-facing environments

Experience with any of the following is considered a strong asset:
- Building envelope restoration
- Waterproofing
- Concrete repair
- Exterior rehabilitation
- Commercial renovations
- Condominium capital projects
- Engineering or consultant-led construction projects
- Estimating, quantity takeoffs, or tendering
- Construction deficiency inspections and quality control

- Opportunities for advancement
- Exposure to both field operations and pre-construction
- Strong team-first company culture
- Steady pipeline of commercial construction, restoration, capital project, and service work across Ottawa

This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced construction professional who wants more responsibility and involvement in project execution without giving up the hands-on side of construction. As Haven continues to grow, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to take on increasingly significant projects and responsibilities within our construction division.
