This role will be a dedicated position supporting equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility within McMaster’s research ecosystem through the support of the research community.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Research Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence (REDIE) in the Office of the Vice President Research, the Specialist, Research Equity, Diversity, and Inclusive Excellence (Specialist, REDIE) is responsible for supporting the McMaster community in integrating equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles into research and commercialization activities.
Supporting research across the institution, the Specialist, REDIE, will be a strong team player with the ability to provide expert guidance across the University through workshops, research grant reviews and resource co-development. As a key EDI resource and support person, the Specialist, REDIE will also support activities related to the Canada Research Chairs EDI Action Plan and support research chairs in the implementation, management and assessment of EDIE within their research programs and the completion of associated institutional EDI reports.
Accountabilities:
- Provide consultation to faculty, research teams, and administrative staff on best practices,
relevant resources and training, and other areas related to EDI in research.
- Reviewing research grant applications with a strong EDI in research lens and helping faculty incorporate contextually relevant and actionable EDI strategies that strengthen their proposed research projects.
- Co-developing and co-hosting evidence-based workshops on EDI in research design and research practice.
- Collaboratively write and review various EDI in research reports, including Canada Excellence Research Chair EDI reports, Canada Impact + Research Chair EDI reports and Canada Research Chairs EDI Action Plan reports.
- Collaborate with chairholders, their teams and external consultants to develop quantitative and qualitative assessments aimed at improving EDI in all aspects of their research programs.
- Collaboratively supporting diverse aspects of the Canada Research Chairs program, e.g., job advertisement reviews, candidate eligibility reviews, job interview rubric reviews.
- Supporting research centers, institutes and core platforms in the development of EDI policies, evaluations and practices as needed.
- Supporting the development of specific and general resources that enable researchers to better incorporate EDI considerations in research design and research practice.
- Keeping up to date with changing and evolving EDI in research policies and requirements across funding and policy programs.
- Ensuring that EDI sections of research grant proposals and reports comply with university policies, protect the University from legal liabilities, and conform to the criteria and guidelines set by relevant programs and/or sponsoring agencies.
- Collaborate with other EDI staff and departments to align practices with broader institutional goals, strategies and approaches.
- Collect and evaluate data to support progress updates and formal reporting related to EDI in Research.
Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of EDI in research practices and the ability to empathetically support others in adapting to change
- Depth and breadth of knowledge of research funding programs across disciplines
- Demonstrated understanding of EDI requirements within the Canadian research funding ecosystem
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other EDI practitioners, staff and faculty in the development of EDI in research workshops, policies and programs
- Comprehensive understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in research Ability to support EDI assessments and translate the outcomes of assessments into practical tools that enhance EDI in research teams across disciplines

Pay Transparency Statement The posted hiring range represents McMaster's typical hiring range for this position.
Actual starting salary will depend on factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions. Individuals with extensive experience, deep specialized expertise, and/or those who can demonstrate exceptional past performance, as applicable, may be hired at a higher rate within the full range, in accordance with the University compensation policies.
