What You’ll Do
This role is responsible as the Chief Engineer to the vessel and master. Responsible for safely responding to marine spill incidents, minimizing the impact to the environment by utilizing various strategies such as containment, protection, recovery, and clean up.
This full-time position is based in Port Alberni and operates on a four-day, 10-hour schedule. The workweek is either Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, as this is an emergency response position, employees must be available to travel on short notice and may be required to work away from home for extended periods in support of spill response operations, exercises, and preparedness activities.
Principal Accountabilities
- Provide safe, prompt, and efficient support for vessel operations, spill incidents, exercises, and preparedness.
- Maintain spill response equipment to ensure it is always operational and response-ready.
- Responsible for all mechanical systems on the inspected vessel fleet.
- Take part in haul-outs, refits, and shipyard periods.
- When operating at sea, they are expected to monitor all systems, ensure performance to spec, and to make at sea repairs or mitigate damage.
- Ensure that all activities are carried out with due regard to personal safety, the safety of others, and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Accountable to engineering management for technical performance and mentorship.
- Complete all assigned monthly work orders on time.
- Support vessel dry docking and assist with Transport Canada Vessel Inspections.
- Provide training to new hires/ casuals/ contractors.
- Work on project teams; build committees, shipyard visits, SME provision to committees.
- Keep current all required certifications, and proficiencies.
- Act in the role assigned by the Spill Response Manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education
- Completion of a high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 4th Class Marine Engineer certificate issued by Transport Canada, at a minimum.
- Must meet the requirements under the marine personnel regulations with respect to medical fitness.
- Must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 22 Kgs on a regular basis.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors under inclement weather.
- Class 5 driver’s license in good standing.
- Valid Seafarers Medical.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- A minimum of one year of previous experience with marine maintenance.
- Class One Drivers’ License or an Endorsement 20 (heavy trailer).
- Experience working with a Safety Management System.
- Collaborative team player who thrives on coordinating and interacting with multiple people on multiple projects, and who can manage shifting priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong leadership skills.
- Strong computer skills, dependable and organized.
- Vessel refit work in drydock.
- Maintenance of small power equipment.
- Working knowledge of local coastlines, and emergency response training and/or experience.
