About Us

Padgett Business Services – Markham West is an established accounting practice providing accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax, and business advisory services to small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.

Our practice is focused on providing practical, personalized accounting and tax solutions while developing long-term relationships with our clients. As our client base continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Staff Accountant who can take responsibility for client files and become a long-term member of our team.

Please note that this position is not intended to fulfill CPA practical experience requirements. It is best suited to an experienced accounting skilled who is looking to continue developing a career in accounting and taxation without requiring CPA-recognized practical experience hours.

The Position

This is a hands-on accounting position with broad exposure to privately owned businesses and individual clients.

The successful candidate will work directly with the Office Manager and will be responsible for managing accounting and tax files through various stages of completion. The role involves significant client interaction and requires someone who is comfortable working independently while knowing when to raise accounting or tax issues for further review.

This position would be particularly well suited to an experienced accountant who enjoys the variety and client relationships of a smaller accounting practice.

Key Responsibilities The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:

- Performing full-cycle accounting and year-end procedures
- Preparing year-end working papers and financial statements
- Preparing adjusting and closing journal entries and account reconciliations
- Preparing corporate income tax returns (T2) and related schedules
- Preparing personal income tax returns (T1), particularly during personal tax season
- Preparing HST returns, payroll filings, and other government remittances
- Reviewing bookkeeping records and identifying accounting discrepancies, unusual transactions, and required adjustments
- Coordinating directly with clients to obtain accounting records, tax information, and supporting documentation
- Communicating with clients regarding accounting, tax, and financial reporting matters
- Handling CRA correspondence, Notices of Assessment/Reassessment, information requests, and other routine CRA inquiries
- Maintaining complete, accurate,



and well-organized electronic client files
- Assisting with tax planning and other accounting or business advisory assignments
- Managing assigned client files and deadlines with an appropriate level of independence
- Performing other accounting and taxation duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate will have:
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
- At least 2 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a public accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, or small-business accounting environment
- Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting and year-end procedures
- Practical experience preparing financial statements and working papers
- Experience preparing Canadian corporate and personal income tax returns
- Familiarity with HST, payroll, and other common small-business compliance requirements
- Experience dealing directly with clients and responding to CRA correspondence
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines independently

A CPA designation is not required. This position does not provide CPA practical experience hours.

Technical Skills

Experience with the following would be considered an asset:

- DT Max or other Canadian T1/T2 tax preparation software
- QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop
- Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookups, PivotTables, data organization, and account reconciliations
- Microsoft Word and Outlook
- CRA Represent a Client and My Business Account
- Payroll and HST preparation
- Adobe Acrobat and electronic document management systems
- Microsoft 365 and cloud-based applications

Candidates who are comfortable using AI-assisted productivity tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar applications for research, information organization, drafting, document processing,



and workflow improvement will be considered an asset. All technology and AI tools must be used responsibly with appropriate consideration for accuracy, confidentiality, privacy, and client information.

- Understands when an accounting or tax issue should be brought forward for further review
- Communicates comfortably and professionally with clients
- Is organized and dependable, particularly around tax and filing deadlines
- Takes pride in producing accurate and well-documented work
- Is resourceful and comfortable researching unfamiliar issues
- Is adaptable and willing to learn new technology and working methods
- Values a stable, collaborative working environment and is interested in a long-term position
