Substitute Teacher - Stoney Education Authority
Employment Type: Casual / On-Call
Locations: Chief Jacob Bearspaw School, Nakoda Elementary School, Mînî Thnî Community School, and Ta Otha
Compensation: $285.00 per day for individuals holding a Permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate
Position Overview
Stoney Education Authority is seeking qualified Substitute Teachers to provide classroom coverage across SEA schools as needed.
Substitute Teachers support continuity of instruction when a regular teacher is absent by delivering assigned lesson plans, maintaining established classroom routines, supervising students, and supporting a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
Assignments may vary by school, grade level, subject area, and schedule. Substitute teaching with SEA is casual and on-call, and assignments are offered according to operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- - Deliver lesson plans, learning activities, and materials prepared for the assigned class.
- - Follow classroom routines, school expectations, and direction from the regular teacher, Principal, or Designate.
- - Maintain active supervision of students during instruction, transitions, and other assigned activities.
- - Support students with diverse learning and classroom needs in accordance with approved plans and school direction.
- - Work collaboratively with Educational Assistants and other school staff.
- - Take attendance and complete required classroom, student, or incident documentation.
- - Communicate significant behavioural, health, safety, or classroom concerns to the Principal or Designate.
- - Maintain student confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
- - Support Stoney Nakoda language, culture, identity, and community connection within the school setting.
- - Participate in cultural, land-based, or outdoor learning when included in the assignment.
Qualifications
Required
- - Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate, Interim or Permanent.
- - Strong classroom management, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- - Ability to adapt to different grade levels, subjects, classroom routines, and student needs.
- - Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and seek assistance when required.
- - Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and reliable attendance.
- - Willingness to work respectfully with Stoney Nakoda students, families, staff, and community members.
Preferred
- - Previous classroom teaching experience.
- - Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioural, communication, or classroom-support needs.
- - Experience working within a First Nations school or Indigenous community.
- - Knowledge of Stoney Nakoda language and culture is considered an asset.
Conditions of Employment
- - A satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check must be provided before the first day of work.
- - Completion of SEA onboarding and required school-site orientation.
- - Assignments, school locations, grade levels, subjects, and schedules vary according to operational needs.
- - Hours and assignments are not guaranteed.
- - Compensation is paid at SEA’s established substitute teaching rate.
- - Individuals holding a Permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate receive $285.00 per day.
