Ships are designed to operate in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Making sure they and their systems can actually do so is an engineering challenge in its own right.
Blumara is looking for a Systems Engineer to support complex marine and defence programs. This role focuses on ensuring that ships, systems, and equipment are suitable for the environmental conditions they're expected to encounter, from extreme temperatures and severe weather to icing, humidity, saltwater exposure, and demanding sea conditions.
We're looking for someone with a sound engineering foundation, an interest in marine systems, and the ability to work through complex technical problems. You don't need to be an expert in operating environment engineering or have extensive naval experience. We're equally interested in an early-career engineer looking to develop specialist expertise and someone with several years of relevant experience.
What matters most is that you're technically curious, comfortable working with engineering requirements and documentation, and capable of applying sound engineering judgement.
The work involves operating environment requirements, design reviews, technical assessments, equipment qualification, verification and validation, and engineering documentation. In other words: making sure that systems designed to work on paper will continue to perform when they're installed on a ship operating in the real world.
What you'll be doing
Depending on your background and experience, responsibilities may include:
- Supporting the management of Operating Environment requirements for ships, systems, and equipment.
- Assessing environmental conditions such as temperature extremes, humidity, precipitation, wind, sea states, icing, solar radiation, and saltwater exposure.
- Reviewing equipment specifications, engineering designs, and technical documentation to assess suitability for intended operating conditions.
- Supporting environmental qualification activities, including reviewing test plans, test reports, qualification evidence, and compliance documentation.
- Identifying environmental engineering issues, technical risks, and potential gaps in requirements or qualification evidence.
- Supporting verification and validation activities to demonstrate compliance with environmental requirements.
- Researching and interpreting relevant engineering standards, specifications, and technical guidance.
- Preparing technical assessments, compliance matrices, engineering reports, and other project deliverables.
- Participating in Integrated Project Teams, Working Groups, design reviews, and technical discussions.
- Working alongside experienced engineers, equipment suppliers, and client stakeholders to resolve technical questions and develop practical engineering solutions.
You'll have the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge across a range of environmental engineering disciplines while contributing to major marine and defence programs.
What we're looking for
You should have
- 2+ years of relevant engineering experience, ideally involving marine systems, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, equipment design, testing, or technical assessment.
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- A sound understanding of engineering principles and an interest in how environmental conditions affect equipment and system performance.
- Experience working with engineering requirements, technical specifications, design documentation, testing, or technical reports.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to research unfamiliar technical subjects and develop well-supported conclusions.
- Positive technical writing and communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- An organized, methodical approach to technical work and documentation.
- A willingness to learn and develop specialist expertise in environmental engineering.
- Eligibility for Canadian security screening.
Particularly useful experience includes:
- Marine, naval, offshore, defence, aerospace, or other complex engineering systems.
- Environmental engineering, equipment qualification,
environmental testing, or technical compliance.
- Familiarity with environmental standards such as MIL-STD-810, relevant NATO standards, or marine classification society requirements.
- Experience assessing environmental effects, including temperature, humidity, icing, salt spray, vibration, shock, or ship motions.
- Experience developing or reviewing engineering requirements, verification and validation documentation, compliance matrices, or technical assessments.
- Experience working with equipment suppliers, multidisciplinary engineering teams, or formal design review processes.
- Familiarity with DND programs, defence engineering requirements, or government technical documentation.
You don't need experience in all these areas. We're looking for someone with a solid technical foundation who can develop the necessary specialist knowledge with support from our engineering team. This is an opportunity to work on technically interesting marine and defence projects, develop expertise in a specialist engineering discipline, and take on increasing technical responsibility as your experience grows.
The objective is straightforward: ensure that ships, systems, and equipment can perform their intended functions in the environments where they're actually expected to operate.
