Qualifications

MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:

- High school completion with job‑related options plus two years = directly-related experience.

OR
- Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with no experience.
- Some post secondary education is preferred neuroscience with focus on synapse development.

EXPERIENCE:

- Experience with expansion microscopy, tissue processing, fluorescence microscopy, image analysis, and basic molecular biology techniques.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Strong microscopy and image-analysis skills are required.
- Excellent fine manual dexterity and attention to detail is required.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures and maintain accurate research records is required.
- Good organizational and communication skills are required.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and experience working in a research laboratory environment.

Key responsibilities

MICROSCOPY AND TISSUE PROCESSING:

- Performs expansion microscopy to enlarge brain tissue samples and enable high-resolution analysis of synaptic proteins and structures.
- Prepares, fixes, sections and immunostains brain tissue using established laboratory protocols.




- Acquires fluorescence microscopy images and optimizes imaging conditions to obtain consistent, high-quality data.
- Carries out these procedures regularly as part of ongoing research projects.

IMAGE AND DATA ANALYSIS:

- Processes and analyzes microscopy images to measure protein localization, synaptic organization and structural changes.
- Uses image-analysis software to quantify experimental results and prepares figures and data summaries.
- Maintains organized records of imaging parameters, analyses and experimental results.

MOLECULAR AND GENERAL LABORATORY TECHNIQUES:

- Performs routine molecular biology procedures including DNA preparation, PCR and genotyping of research mouse lines.
- Prepares reagents, buffers and samples required for microscopy and other experiments.
- Maintains laboratory materials and assists with troubleshooting and optimization of experimental protocols.
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
