Role Responsibilities Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Community Engagement, the Strategic Advisor coordinates and participates in projects and initiatives that support improved health outcomes and more effective health care delivery for Indigenous Albertans. The Strategic Advisor will be responsible for developing policy options and strategic approaches for Indigenous health policy, by synthesizing and analyzing complex material from diverse sources and often in collaboration with colleagues internally, other jurisdictions, and with First Nations and Métis organizations.
The Strategic Advisor applies knowledge and strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills to multiple, concurrent initiatives. This position demands strong interpersonal skills, and the incumbent must exercise some independent judgment, set priorities, and make decisions in a complex working environment.
This position will be responsible for the following duties:
Research and prepare briefing materials and other correspondence on a variety of Indigenous health policy issues/initiatives in an effective and timely manner.
Enable informed and high-quality decision-making by providing policy advice and strategic direction to the Minister and Deputy Minister.
Support divisions drafting policies, or programs with information and advice on Indigenous impacts and assist or advise on Indigenous engagement planning and execution.
Work collaboratively with First Nations, and Métis partners to assist in integrating community priorities with broader health system priorities as part of system planning.
Access a variety of information sources: academic research, grey literature, social media,
provincial/territorial/ federal resources, Alberta Government policies and programs, and consult with key internal and external experts as necessary.
Support the identification of First Nations and Métis public health needs, and health service gaps, and build community connections with Ministry service planning groups.
Representing Indigenous Health and/or the Partnerships and Collaborations Branch on various Ministry and Government of Alberta policy committees and task groups in order to bring an Indigenous health lens to discussions and outcomes.
Providing ongoing information and feedback to various Indigenous stakeholder working groups and committees on Ministry strategies and policies to improve Indigenous health outcomes.

Qualifications Requirements:
University graduation in a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
The following knowledge or experiences are considered as assets:
Experience in Indigenous Health.
Strong knowledge of First Nations and Métis organizations, governance structures, and effective engagement practices that foster respectful and reciprocal relationships.
Strong knowledge of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultural practices, protocols, and histories.
Experience working with an Indigenous government or organization.
Experience in strategic planning and implementation within government or a similar environment, particularly in with an Indigenous focus.
Experience preparing and providing written reports, analysis, briefings, letters, and presentations.
Effective communications skills (written and oral) to collaborate effectively with colleagues and with internal and external stakeholders.
Collaboration skills to successfully work in a cross-functional team environment and leadership skills.
Organization and prioritization skills to balance multiple ongoing projects at one time and ability to meet tight timelines and cope with changing priorities.

This is a full-time position, with regular working hours of 36.25 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
This position is based in Calgary, Alberta.
