SUMMARY: The Licensed Practical Nurse is to work under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse, per Section 961 of Chapter 11 of the La. State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners. The LPN is responsible for daily documentation of nursing activities performed and for maintaining strict confidentiality in this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- To provide nursing services to all day program and vocational participants
- Maintains a file on all day program and vocational participants, documenting all pertinent medical/health/behavioral related information, including, but not limited to, maintaining an updated seizure list, high-risk for falls list, diet list, and copies of current 90-L’s
- Provides Gastrostomy Tube feedings and urinary catheterizations to those with physician orders
- Orients new employees on bloodborne pathogens, signs and symptoms of illness and injury, and CPR/First aid.
- Records and monitors all medications administered to day program and vocational participants.
- Maintains current physician orders on all medications administered by nurse or self-administered by participants
- Conducts assessments on day program and vocational participants as needed
- Maintains first aid supplies and renders first aid as needed to program participants and staff as needed
- Weighs all Community Home participants monthly and any other participants with weight risks
- Maintains current medication orders for Respite participants; checks medications in prior to the Respite weekend, communicates with families any discrepancies to ensure accuracy; prepares MARs monthly
- Serves as a resource person for families and staff in general health care.
- Diabetic monitoring and insulin administration to insulin-dependent recipients in day/vocational programs
- Orders medical supplies as needed
- Checks in monthly and daily medication deliveries.
- Communicates refills to pharmacy as needed.
- Administers TB skin test to recent hire staff and to Community Home participants annually
- Reads TB skin test and maintains records.
- Qualifications: Must be at least 22 years of age and hold a current license to practice in Louisiana as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Education and/or Experience: Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year College or technical school.
