The Town of Petawawa is establishing a pool of firefighter candidates. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview as vacancies arise within the Department.

The Firefighter position consists of manual work of a hazardous nature involving fighting fires, difficult rescue work such as, but not limited to auto-extrication, and ice water and swift water rescues. Regular training and some maintenance work on fire department assets and vehicles is required. These are paid on call positions that require a significant time commitment for both training and responding to emergency incidents. Applicants must:

- Be 18 years of age or older
- Possess a minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Reside within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Petawawa (including Garrison Petawawa)
- Successfully complete job specific medical and fitness assessments
- Be available to respond to a variety of calls during daytime, evenings, nights and weekends
- Be able to attend required training and complete the mandatory training program
- Be available for one week of standby on-call coverage per month

- Class DZ license
- Firefighter related courses and certifications

Recruit Firefighter Training and Licensing Requirements:

Recruit Firefighters are required to obtain NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification, as well as an Ontario DZ driver’s licence.





Probationary firefighters hired who do not hold NFPA 1001 qualifications will receive the required training in-house and must complete approximately 260 hours of additional training within their first 12 months of employment to achieve Firefighter I and II certification. This commitment is in addition to regular shift training, departmental training, emergency response requirements, and the other duties and responsibilities expected of all department members.

Driver training is also provided in-house. Probationary firefighters are required to obtain their D-class learner’s permit within the first six months of employment and will then complete the necessary departmental driver training and licensing requirements toward obtaining their DZ licence.

Rate of Pay:

- $24.35 (probationary rate) to $37.44 per hour (max rate) for active duty
- $300.00 + 3 hours active duty pay/stand-by shift
