Humans of HR has been engaged by a high-end retail company to hire a People & Culture Manager for its Vancouver head office.

This is a design-led, fast-growing brand with a global following. It has around 70 people across corporate offices in Vancouver and New York and flagship retail stores in the US. The business is big enough that the work is varied, and small enough that you'll see your impact every day and work directly with the owners and senior leaders.

We're looking for a hands-on People & Culture Manager who wants to own the whole people function, from hiring and onboarding to employee relations, benefits, compliance and reporting. You'll report to the CFO and be supported by a People & Culture Coordinator. You'll also get a proper hands-on handover from the current leader before you take the reins.

What you'll be doing
People strategy and operations

Act as the go-to advisor for leadership on anything people-related, including team structure, workforce planning, change and day-to-day decisions

Keep policies, procedures and the employee handbook current and practical, and compliant with BC and US employment rules

Track the numbers that matter (turnover, time-to-fill, absence, engagement) and turn them into useful insights for leadership

Look for ways to simplify processes and make the employee experience better

Hiring and growth

Run hiring end to end: scoping roles, sourcing, interviewing, compensation conversations, offers and onboarding

Build a talent pipeline ahead of the business's growth

Make onboarding something new hires remember for the right reasons

Lead probation and annual performance reviews, and coach managers through performance conversations

Support training, career development, succession planning and engagement initiatives

Employee relations

Give employees and managers clear, fair and practical guidance on workplace issues

Handle sensitive matters with discretion, including investigations, complaints and terminations, bringing in legal counsel when needed

Make sure discipline and grievance processes are applied consistently

Coordinate immigration paperwork and timelines when needed

Payroll, benefits and systems

Oversee bi-monthly payroll for Canada and the US. Canadian payroll is outsourced to a third-party provider, and US payroll runs on an easy-to-use platform

Coordinate year-end payroll (T4s, T4As, W-2s, 1099s), remittances and reconciliations

Administer benefits, time off and other employee programs, and manage renewals and vendors

Keep employee records accurate and make the most of the HRIS (BambooHR)

Reporting and budgets

Prepare monthly people, payroll and compensation reports for leadership and Finance

Work closely with the CFO on the people budget, forecasts, accruals and board meeting prep

Support compensation benchmarking, salary bands,

bonus cycles and pay equity reviews

What you bring

5+ years of progressive HR experience, ideally as an HR Manager, HR Business Partner or People & Culture lead

Solid knowledge of BC employment standards. Exposure to US employment practices is a bonus, not a must

Broad generalist experience across employee relations, performance, benefits, hiring and compensation

Payroll experience is an asset but not mandatory, since Canadian payroll is outsourced

Sharp attention to detail and positive judgment with confidential information

A warm, outgoing and diplomatic style. You build trust with senior leaders, bring people along, and know when to make the call and when to seek approval

A practical, business-minded approach and a real appetite to learn quickly

No formal payroll experience is required but some understanding will be highly regarded.

What's on offer

$90,000–$120,000 base salary, depending on experience

10% discretionary annual bonus

Extended health benefits with 100% of premiums paid by the employer

$1,000 annual flex spending account (health and/or personal spending)

Three weeks' vacation

37.5-hour work week (9:00–5:30 with an hour for lunch)

In the office five days a week during initial training, then four days in the office and one from home

A newly renovated office in Vancouver with free on-site parking

If you're a people leader who wants real ownership, close access to leadership and a front-row seat in a growing global brand, we'd love to hear from you.
