The Indigenous Workplace Mentor (IWM) supervises and works alongside Marymound clients while they gain work experience that they can apply to future employment opportunities. In addition, the IWM provides opportunities to youth to gain awareness and exposure to Indigenous land-based practices, ceremonies and teachings, and consults directly with the Cultural Department staff in implementing land-based cultural activities for their program. This dynamic position is responsible for providing and promoting skills through opportunities, social enterprise and special projects, including Marymound’s kitchen and catering program, Marymound’s hot dog cart, and Marymound’s Cultural healing services. They will also be required to perform yard maintenance on an as‑needed basis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises clients within the SWEEP work program including but not limited to the hot dog cart, kitchen placements including catering, yard work and maintenance in all seasons;
Works with the Cultural Department to develop and facilitate Indigenous land-based programming to youth in the program to pass on traditional knowledge and land-based practices, strengthening their bond and connection with the Indigenous community;
Proactively identifies ways to incorporate Indigenous teachings and experiences into existing programming;
Evaluates, records, and reports client progress as well as assesses the personal and social development of each program participant;
Manages behavioural dynamics as part of the individualized treatment process for the clients;
Ensures all major behaviour incident reports are satisfactorily completed;
Assumes joint responsibility in maintaining constant communication with care providers on matters relating to youth, staff and general operations;
Role models excellent customer service skills and strong work ethics.
Partners with businesses in the community to provide work placements;
Assists in the various social enterprise endeavours with the outcome of transferring acquired skills into the community;
Maintains health and safety standards;
Attends virtual cultural program planning, staff meetings, and training as required;
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Certificate/diploma in Child & Youth Care, or applicable post-secondary education (i.e. social work, psychology, counselling, etc.) is preferred;
Experience providing physical, psychological, and social support to at-risk youth or other vulnerable populations is preferred;
Must be familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children and youth;
Working experience in hospitality/food preparation with sound knowledge of food safety standards is an asset;
Experience working from a trauma-informed perspective is required;
Knowledge of Indigenous teachings, culture, and history including participating in cultural practices, programming and ceremonies alongside youth;
Experience working with the Indigenous community is preferred;
Knowledgeable in the planning, delivery, and coordination of cultural programming;
Ability to speak a First Nations language would be considered an asset;
Knowledge and experience in issues and support related to addictions, harm reduction strategies, and/or sexual exploitation would be considered an asset;
Valid First Aid/CPR is required;
Mental health/crisis training certifications, including NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills) would be considered an asset;
Valid class 5 driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract;
Satisfactory Criminal Record and clear Vulnerable Sector checks;
Clear Child Abuse Registry and satisfactory Prior Contact checks;
Exceptional multi-tasking and time-management skills, with the ability to autonomously prioritize tasks;
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, or willingness to learn, including participating in cultural practices, programming and ceremonies alongside youth is an asset;
Strong written and oral communication skills;
Basic computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software;
Physically able to perform the duties of the job.
