Andrology Technologist – IVF Laboratory

Position Summary

The Andrology Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic and therapeutic laboratory procedures related to male fertility assessment and treatment. This role supports the preparation, analysis, cryopreservation, and storage of semen samples for assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The Andrology Technologist ensures all activities are performed in accordance with Health Canada’s Safety of Sperm and Ova Regulations, CFAS guidelines, internal laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and applicable quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Perform semen analysis and sperm preparation for IUI, IVF, and ICSI, and process surgical retrievals (PESA/TESA) as required.
- Assess semen quality and document morphology, motility, concentration, and other relevant parameters using standardized methods and established quality control criteria.
- Process and cryopreserve semen samples, manage cryostorage inventory, and maintain accurate storage and inventory records.
- Ensure correct identification, labeling, traceability, and secure handling of all specimens in accordance with laboratory identification and confidentiality standards.
- Maintain accurate daily records related to quality control, equipment calibration, maintenance, and environmental monitoring.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot andrology laboratory equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and clinic protocols.




- Follow applicable Health Canada requirements, CFAS guidelines, and internal SOPs related to donor and patient gamete handling.
- Collaborate with embryology and nursing teams to coordinate patient treatment timelines, procedures, and specimen logistics.
- Assist with laboratory audits, inspections, documentation, and data collection in support of quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in ongoing training, competency assessments, and professional development to maintain current technical knowledge and demonstrated competency.

Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician certification or MLPAO registration considered an asset.
- CFAS certification or eligibility considered an asset.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in andrology or a related fertility laboratory environment preferred.
- Knowledge of semen analysis, sperm processing, cryopreservation, and Health Canada requirements related to donor sperm.
- Robust technical accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety, specimen integrity, traceability, and confidentiality.
- Effective communication, organization, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory team.

Working Environment

- Clinical IVF laboratory setting with exposure to biological materials and use of microscopes and other precision laboratory instruments.
- May require weekend or holiday rotation coverage based on clinical operations.
- Must adhere to aseptic technique, infection prevention and control, and laboratory safety procedures at all times.
