Key Responsibilities

Shelter Operations and Animal Care

- Maintain clean and sanitary animal housing areas, including bedding, feeding, exercise, and enrichment programs.
- Ensure all staff and volunteers are trained in animal handling, caregiving procedures, and shelter protocols.
- Provide coaching and corrective action when procedures are not followed.
- Manage animal intake capacity based on available kennel space and resources.
- Coordinate with the Animal Health Manager to ensure all animals receive appropriate assessments and medical care.
- Ensure staff receive ongoing dog handling and safety training.
- Manage Pet Food Pantry Program

Staff Leadership and Administration

- Supervise, support, and mentor shelter staff.
- Responsible for payroll administration in collaboration with the Executive Director.
- Prepare and maintain staff schedules, ensuring coverage is available at least three to four weeks in advance.
- Approve vacation requests and coordinate staffing adjustments as required.




- Address workplace conflicts and performance concerns through coaching, verbal and written warnings, and proper documentation.
- Ensure daily operational tasks are completed effectively and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate shelter records and ensure the Shelter Manager software system remains current and properly utilized.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure operations support the organization's mission and strategic objectives.

Intake and Animal Logistics

- Manage Municipal Enforcement Division (MED) impounds in accordance with the City of Yellowknife contract.
- Monitor and respond to intake requests, emails, and messages in a timely manner.
- Assess shelter capacity and coordinate admissions accordingly.
- Collaborate with staff to identify animals suitable for transfer to partner rescue organizations.
- Coordinate with rescue partners, trainers, behaviourists, and transport teams to ensure complete disclosure of each animal's medical and behavioural history prior to transfer.
- Assist with transportation and logistical planning as required.

Facility and Equipment Management

- Conduct daily inspections of shelter grounds and outdoor kennels.
- Ensure hazards, waste, and maintenance concerns are addressed promptly.
- Report facility issues and repair needs to the Executive Director.
- Assist in developing and maintaining facility maintenance schedules and checklists.
- Ensure shelter vehicles are maintained and fueled.
- Serve as an emergency contact for shelter alarm systems and facility emergencies.
- Participate in after-hours response for MED impounds and animal emergencies during extreme weather conditions.

Pay: $60,000.00 per year
